Fauvism

Andre Derain Henri Matisse

Fauvism – Art History Based in a small town outside Paris 1904 – 1908 Strongly influenced by the work of Van Gogh, Cezanne, and other artist of the late 1800’s. Henri Matisse is considered the leader of the movement. This movement was all about COLOR. Characterized by bold brush strokes and vibrant use of colors. While widely respected today, the Fauves received mostly poor reviews when they were first exhibited. Fauve means “Wild Beasts”

Henri Matisse (French)

This is where Matisse started out. Henri Matisse, “The Dessert, Harmony in Red”, 1908, Oil on Canvas (70.9” x 86.6”) Compare this painting… …with this one

Hi, I’m Andre Derain. I worked with Matisse to create a new style of painting featuring brilliant, unrealistic colors. I was also a snappy dresser. Hi, I’m Andre Derain. I worked with Matisse to create a new style of painting featuring brilliant, unrealistic colors. I was also a snappy dresser.
