The Resurrection (Mathew 28:2-4) After the Sabbath  The first day of the week began to dawn  Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the tomb. There was a great earthquake  For an angel of the Lord descended from Heaven,  Rolled back the stone from the door, and sat on it. His countenance was like lightning  His clothing as white as snow. The guards shook for fear of him  Became like dead men.

Chronology Questions Matthew 28:1, 5-9Mark 16:1-8Luke 24:1-12John 20: ¶ In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre. 7 And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you. 9 And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him. 1 ¶ Now when the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, that they might come and anoint Him. 2 Very early in the morning, on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb when the sun had risen. 4 But when they looked up, they saw that the stone had been rolled away--for it was very large. 5 And entering the tomb, 7 "But go, tell His disciples-- and Peter--that He is going before you into Galilee; 8 So they went out quickly and fled from the tomb, for they trembled and were amazed. And they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid. 1 ¶ Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them. Galilee, 10 It was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and other women that were with them, which told these things unto the apostles. 11 And their words seemed to them as idle tales, and they believed them not. 12 Then arose Peter, and ran unto the sepulchre; and stooping down, he beheld the linen clothes laid by themselves, and departed, wondering in himself at that which was come to pass. 1 ¶ Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene went to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. 2 Then she ran and came to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and said to them, "They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him." 3 Peter therefore went out, and the other disciple, and were going to the tomb. 10 Then the disciples went away again to their own homes. What is the purpose of John’s writings? John 20:30-31 & 21:24-25

Visit of the Women (Mark 16:2-8; Matthew 28:1-8; Luke 24:1-8; John 20:1) Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome and other women  Bought spices to anoint Him. It is very early in the morning  As the sun was rising They debate among themselves  Who will roll away the stone from the door of the tomb for us?  But when they looked up  They saw that the stone had been rolled away--for it was very large Did Mary Magdalene turn back at this point?

Visit of the Women (Mark 16:2-8; Matthew 28:1-8; Luke 24:1-8; John 20:1) Entering the tomb  They did not find the body of the Lord Jesus,  They were greatly perplexed  (Mark) They saw a young man clothed in a long white robe sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed.  (Luke) Two men stood by them in shining garments They were afraid and bowed their faces to the earth  "Why do you seek the living among the dead?”  Do not be alarmed  You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified.  He is risen! He is not here.  Come, See the place where they laid Him.

Visit of the Women (Mark 16:2-8; Matthew 28:1-8; Luke 24:1-8; John 20:1) Go quickly - tell His disciples --and Peter-- that He is risen from the dead; and, behold, He goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see Him Remember how He spoke to you when He in Galilee  The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.  They Remembered His words And they departed quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy; and did run to bring His disciples word.  They trembled and were amazed  They said nothing to anyone (speechless)

Telling the Disciples (Luke 24:9-11) Then they returned from the tomb  Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women  Told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. Their words seemed to them like idle tales  They did not believe them.

Mary tells Peter and John (John 20:2-10; Luke 24:12) Mary ran and told Peter and John They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him Peter and John take off running John arrives and looks in Peter arrives and goes in They found Linen clothes laying there Handkerchief (covered the head) folded and laying to the side

Mary tells Peter and John (John 20:2-10; Luke 24:12) John followed saw and believed (v. 8) For as yet they did not know the Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead. Then the disciples went away again to their own homes. Peter departed, wondering in himself at that which was come to pass.

The Appearances of Jesus to Mary Magdalene (Mark 16:9-11; John 20:11-18) He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom He had cast seven demons. (Mk 16:9) Mary stood outside the tomb weeping, looking in She sees two angels Head and feet of where Jesus laid Woman why are you weeping? Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him.

The Appearances of Jesus to Mary Magdalene (Mark 16:9-11; John 20:11-18) Now turning she sees Jesus She didn’t know it was Him (must have appeared like a man) Jesus says, “Why are you crying?, Who are you seeking?” She thinks He is the gardener Jesus says to her “Mary!” She turns and says, “Rabonni” She clings to Him Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, 'I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.

The Appearances of Jesus to Mary Magdalene (Mark 16:9-11; John 20:11-18) As the disciples mourned and wept (16:10) Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord She told them what He had said to her THEY DID NOT BELIEVE

The Appearances of Jesus to Other Women (Matthew 28:9-10) And as the other women went to tell His disciples, Jesus met them,  Hail! – A salutation “Greetings”, "Rejoice!“, etc…  So they came and held Him by the feet and worshiped Him. Do not be afraid Go and tell My brethren to go to Galilee, and there they will see Me. NOTE: Bob tells of Luke 12:9-12 here

The Appearances of Jesus: Guard’s Report (Matthew 28:11-15) What had happened to the guards? The Guards go to the Chief Priest and not the Roman Governor. Why? What do they tell them? What do the Chief Priest do? Assemble the elders and consult

The Appearances of Jesus: Guard’s Report (Matthew 28:11-15) They gave a large sum of money to the soldiers Here is the story, 'His disciples came at night and stole Him away while we slept.’ If this comes to the governor's ears, we will appease him and make you secure. They took the money and did as they were told This saying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day How would this have made them look?
