First objective Dissemination on the sitting position of wheelchair users to the staff in institutions. Research problem: How do we construct a teaching course on sitting position to the educational and care giving staff so that knowledge can be used in practice? Mary Petersen, NATIONAL BOARD OF SOCIAL SERVICES 5th Nordic Seating Symposium 2012

Final project A survey project with the objective to discover, which factors in connection with the use of a standing hoist, that influence the quality of the sitting position. The aim is to achieve and disseminate evidence based knowledge, to ensure and enhance the assumption of the sitting position by use of a standing hoist. Mary Petersen, NATIONAL BOARD OF SOCIAL SERVICES 5th Nordic Seating Symposium 2012

Final objective Point out the central focus points Assumption of the sitting position by use of a standing hoist Dissemination of knowledge to transfer instructors and therapists Mary Petersen, NATIONAL BOARD OF SOCIAL SERVICES 5th Nordic Seating Symposium 2012

Hypothesises The standing is first and foremost seen as a tool for the working environment There is no focus on landing in the chair The wheelchair user doesn’t have the physical prerequisites to be transferred with a standing hoist Mary Petersen, NATIONAL BOARD OF SOCIAL SERVICES 5th Nordic Seating Symposium 2012

Go to YouTube Waverly Glen – Stand Aid (7.00) Mary Petersen, NATIONAL BOARD OF SOCIAL SERVICES 5th Nordic Seating Symposium 2012

Design 5 cases: Observation of the transfer process Interview of the citizen and the care giver Data processing by clinical reasoning, uncovering of focus points Dissemination project for transfer instructors Mary Petersen, NATIONAL BOARD OF SOCIAL SERVICES 5th Nordic Seating Symposium 2012

Supplementary methods Literature review: – Instructions in the use of standing hoists – Theory on seating – Theory on interview – Theory on dissemination Mary Petersen, NATIONAL BOARD OF SOCIAL SERVICES 5th Nordic Seating Symposium 2012

5 cases Citizens: Thoracic kyphosis + “Stiff legs” Hemiplegic + Hip prosthesis bilateral Hemiplegic Multiple sclerosis Mary Petersen, NATIONAL BOARD OF SOCIAL SERVICES 5th Nordic Seating Symposium 2012

5 cases Care givers: Social and health care helper Social and health care assistant Transfer instructor Nursing assistant Mary Petersen, NATIONAL BOARD OF SOCIAL SERVICES 5th Nordic Seating Symposium 2012

Observations Observation guide + video Mostly verbal guiding – “push your behind backwards” The citizens get little or no encouragement to correct their sitting position Mary Petersen, NATIONAL BOARD OF SOCIAL SERVICES 5th Nordic Seating Symposium 2012

Interviews The care giver is very aware of The prerequisites of the citizen The correct use of hoist and sling The citizen pushing the behind backwards Citizen’s perception It is easy I get an opportunity to be active I can correct my position my self Mary Petersen, NATIONAL BOARD OF SOCIAL SERVICES 5th Nordic Seating Symposium 2012

Data processing Mary Petersen, NATIONAL BOARD OF SOCIAL SERVICES 5th Nordic Seating Symposium 2012

Focus points Change of position from standing to sitting Verbal guiding supplemented with physical guiding The guideposts of the sitting position (individual) Correction of the sitting position The standing hoist is not training equipment Mary Petersen, NATIONAL BOARD OF SOCIAL SERVICES 5th Nordic Seating Symposium 2012

The further course Dissemination project Produce a dissemination concept for care givers Prepare an instruction in the use of a standing hoist Bachelor project Mary Petersen, NATIONAL BOARD OF SOCIAL SERVICES 5th Nordic Seating Symposium 2012
