3 Objectives of the MAS  This important and mandatory survey provides information on the nature, extent, and trends in alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use by students in grades 6, 8, 10 and 12 throughout the state of Maryland.  Survey results assist in program planning and implementation and have an important role to play in decisions affecting all students statewide.

4 How Valid are the MAS Results for My School System? MAS findings are valid, reliable, and representative because of: 1. School and class-level sampling 2. Study design using reliable and valid questions 3. Serious and confidential administration atmosphere

MARYLAND ADOLESCENT SURVEY STATE OF MARYLAND Substance Use in the Last 12 Months HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE 2004 MARYLAND ADOLESCENT SURVEY REPORT Users of alcohol in all grades are less likely than non-users to have an adult who always talks about not using alcohol. Across all grades and locations at least 76% of respondents say they feel safe. Twenty three percent of 12 th graders report riding with a driver who was under the influence of alcohol in the last 12 months.
