Man Made Sources of Light AKA Mr. Abe’s “Light Show”

Incandescent Bulb How it works: A filament glows in a bulb filled with Argon gas. Advantages: Very Cheap and they give off a nice “warm light”. Disadvantages: The filament wears out and a good deal of energy is wasted via heat loss.

Fluorescent Bulb How it works: Electricity flows through a tube of gas making it glow. Advantages: Since there is no filament they last a long time and they are cooler so they are more efficient. Disadvantages: They don’t give off the warm light of a bulb with heat and they have mercury in them.

Halogen Bulb How it works: A filament glows in a tiny pocket filled with Halogen gas. Advantages: The filament doesn’t burn out as fast and they are small and they are very bright. Disadvantages: They get very hot (energy loss and dangerous) and are fairly fragile.

LED (Light Emitting Diode) How it works: Atoms pop up and down on two little plates making it glow. Advantages: They give off very little to no heat and last for a very long time. Disadvantages: They are not as bright as some other lights.

Neon Light How it works: Electricity flows through a tube of gas making it glow. Advantages: Different gases glow different colors Disadvantages: They just glow one color.

Black Light How it works: A filament glows in a bulb filled gas and they give off light and ultra violet energy. Advantages: It is very useful for forensics and entertainment. Disadvantages: They don’t light a room.

Laser How it works: Lasers produce powerful beams of one color. Advantages: The beam stays tight making it very useful for many things. Disadvantages: Lasers are very dangerous if they shine directly in our eyes.

Glowing “Stuff” How it works: Chemicals either mix together to produce light, or store light from other sources and release the light slowly. Advantages: It makes things fun. Disadvantages: Glow in the dark stuff doesn’t light up for long periods of time.

How do you think this bulb works? There is an LED with a device that changes the frequency of the atoms and changes the color of the light.

The End Hope you enjoyed the “Light Show”
