Physical Fitness Test (PFT) Spring 2011 Presented by Department of Research and Evaluation 1

2 Healthy Fitness Zones (HFZs) Preparing for the PFT Testing Components Reporting Data What’s New? Test Coordinator Responsibilities State Regulations AGENDA Material Return

3 What’s New for ? New HFZs and Performance Standards for Aerobic Capacity and Body Composition New HFZ charts provide minimal scores (no longer a range of scores) “Up to a Max” designation for Curl-Up, Push-Up, Modified Pull-Up, Flexed-Arm Hang, and Sit & Reach tests New PFT Data Fields –Two-part Race/Ethnicity questions –Economic Status Fields NSLP eligibility Parent Education Level

4 What’s New for ? (cont) Changes to HFZ for Aerobic Capacity –The one-mile run and PACER aerobic capacity test scores will be converted to estimate a student’s VO 2 max. One-mile time must NOT exceed 13 minutes. Height and weight will need to be collected for each student. Three levels of performance standards: –In the HFZ. –Needs Improvement – Some Risk. –Needs Improvement – High Risk.

5 What’s New for ? (cont) –New student-level data that must be collected to estimate student’s VO 2 max.

6 What’s New for ? (cont) Changes to HFZ for Body Composition –Body Mass Index (BMI) and percent body fat HFZs have been adjusted to be more comparable. –There are now four levels of performance standards: Very Lean (considered in HFZ). In the HFZ. Needs Improvement – Some Risk. Needs Improvement – High Risk.

California Education Code Section requires: Annual administration of the Physical Fitness Test (PFT) to all students statewide in grades five, seven, and nine. Students are required to participate whether or not they are in a physical fitness class. Administration of the PFT is between February 1 st and May 31 st. 7

The PFT provides information that can be used: By students to assess levels of health-related fitness and to plan personal fitness programs. By teachers to design curriculum for physical education classes. By parents and guardians to understand students’ fitness levels. By teachers, parents, and guardians to monitor changes in the students’ fitness levels. 8

What are the fitness areas tested? The FITNESSGRAM tests the following six fitness areas: -Aerobic Capacity (one-mile run, pacer, or mile walk for ages 13 and over) -Body Composition (body mass index) -Abdominal Strength & Endurance (curl-up) -Trunk Extensor Strength & Flexibility (trunk lift) -Upper Body Strength & Endurance (push-up) -Flexibility (back-saver sit and reach) 9

Performance in each of the fitness areas is classified into two levels (except for Aerobic Capacity and Body Composition): Healthy Fitness Zone (HFZ) Needs Improvement (i.e., not in the HFZ) Let’s look at the revised HFZs 10

Students with Disabilities Students with disabilities who are unable to take the entire PFT should be given as much of test as conditions permit. 11

Test Coordinator Responsibilities The test site coordinator is responsible for the administration of the PFT within the school site. The coordinator is also directly responsible for coordinating all activities pertaining to the security, distribution, and return of materials, as well as training all test examiners. 12

Your Site Training Log attendance by using a sign-in sheet Watch the video Review the manual (Use the handouts you are provided) 13

Preparing for the PFT Administration PFT Website 14

Flat, measured running course Stopwatch Scale Ruler or tape measure (to measure height) Pencils Score sheets (page 99) Warm up and cool down Recording partner to monitor minutes and seconds –max time for one-mile run is 13 minutes Page One-Mile Run Aerobic Capacity

PACER Flat, nonslippery surface 20 meters in length Audio CD with Cadence CD player Marker cones Scale Ruler or tape measure (to measure height) Pencils Score sheets (page 95-98) Warm up and cool down Recording partner to monitor laps Page Aerobic Capacity

Walk Test Flat, measured course Stopwatches (two or more) Scale Ruler or tape measure (to measure height) Pencils Score sheets (page 100) Warm up and cool down Train students to measure their heart rate Train students to walk at a consistent pace throughout the test Recording partner to monitor minutes and seconds Page Aerobic Capacity

Curl-Up Measuring strip inches long and 4 ½ inches wide Sheets of paper for under the head Audio CD with Cadence CD player 1 partner records while the other completes a curl-up 1 every 3 seconds, up to 75 (without pausing) –scores above 75 are still recorded at 75 Page Abdominal Strength & Endurance

Trunk Lift A yardstick with tape at 6, 9 & 12 inches Marker on floor for face 2 trials with highest score recorded 12 inch maximum –scores above 12 inches are still recorded at 12 inches DO NOT encourage students to raise higher than 12 inches Page Trunk Extensor Strength & Flexibility

Height/Weight Scale Ruler or tape measure Remove shoes for height and weight Measure in feet and inches & pounds Maintain confidentially when weighing students Class Score Sheet Page Body Composition - BMI

Push-Up Audio CD with Cadence CD player 1 90-degree push-up every 3 seconds –scores above 50 are still recorded at 50 Same protocol for males and females Students are stopped when the second form correction (mistake) is made Recorder to count push-ups Page Upper Body Strength & Endurance

23 Options for Reporting Data Excel Spreadsheet Test Recording Sheet

Excel Spreadsheet 24 Student scores will be based on student’s age on the date when the first test is administered to the student –The first day of testing must be added to each student’s record Type-in information clearly and correctly Make sure every section is filled out completely Mark 0 (zero) for no score Record only the highest score for Aerobic Capacity The Participation Level field MUST BE completed for every student –1 = Complete – Student has scores for all SIX fitness areas –2 = Partial – Student has scores for ONE, TWO, THREE, FOUR, or FIVE fitness areas –3 = None – Student DOES NOT have scores for any fitness areas If a student is assigned a code of 2(Partial) or 3(None) for Participation Level, then ONE reason is identified and coded under the Reason for Participation Level

Test Recording Sheet 25 Student scores will be based on student’s age on the date when the first test is administered to the student –The first day of testing must be added to each student’s record Bubble-in information clearly and correctly Make sure every section is filled out completely School # and Student ID must be complete for non Pre- ID recording sheets Mark 0 (zero) for no score ONLY use PENCIL! Clean stray marks Record only the highest score for Aerobic Capacity The Participation Level field MUST BE completed for every student –1 = Complete – Student has scores for all SIX fitness areas –2 = Partial – Student has scores for ONE, TWO, THREE, FOUR, or FIVE fitness areas –3 = None – Student DOES NOT have scores for any fitness areas If a student is assigned a code of 2(Partial) or 3(None) for Participation Level, then ONE reason is identified and coded under the Reason for Participation Level

Excel Spreadsheet/Test Recording Sheet Reason for Participation Level: –Absent on test date AND all make-up sessions –IEP/Section 504 Plan/Disabilities –Extraordinary Circumstances e.g., temporary school closure, etc. –Medical excuse e.g., temporary illness, injury, doctor’s note, etc. The goal is 100% participation for all students in grades 5, 7 & 9 26

Results Individual and summary results are reported for each fitness area. Reports of summary results are provided to the Governor and the Legislature and are made available on the internet. –Information can be found on Data Quest 27
