How long does our snowball last? How long can we keep it from melting? What will happen to our snowman? How will our rubbish change over time if we bury it in the ground? (safety do not use meat or fish) We’ve bought some bubble kits for the party. How long do our bubbles last? There is a big puddle in the playground. What happens by lunchtime? Chocolate melts- How does and egg change when we het it? Bread when we toast it? Popcorn when we heat it….? Grouping and Classify Children have been playing in the dressing up area and the clothes are all muddled. How can we sort them out? We want to make an umbrella. There are lots of materials to make it. How can we sort the materials to find out those we think will work and those that won’t? How can we sort the materials for recycling? We have lots of things to post- how can we sort the packaging so we know which is the best for wrapping different items? The pens and pencils have been muddled up…how can we sort them. Do they all write on different surfaces?

Is there a pattern in the size of snow men/ice lollies and how long they take to melt? How many turns of the clockwork key are needed to make the toy car go 1m; 2m…… This paper clip is magnetic and a good conductor of electricity. Are magnetic things always good conductors? Research How are candles made? How can sea water be made drinkable? Why do we insulate buildings? Why do tea bags come in different shapes and sizes? When was plastic invented? How has this changed our lives? Fair test The school sports kits are dirty. What is the best way to get them clean? ….soap? Temperature? Does our washing dry better on a windy or sunny day? We are making a bubble mixture what happens when we change the ingredients in our recipe? How does changing the recipe affect how long the bubbles last? Will people think that cup cakes are different flavours if we make them different colours? Which is the best material for….clothes; chair cover; curtains….. How can we stop our snow man from melting?

What changes? How quickly do they grow? How far will a snail go in 5 minutes? Do other animals move faster or slower? How do plants change as they grow? Which plants are the quickest for us to grow to eat? How does our compost change over time? How do we change as we get older. What can we see in our photos? Classify How can we identify what is alive and not alive? We found a lot of creatures/ plants around our school. How can we make a key to name them? Can we use the way they move to group them? All the plants in the garden centre are muddled up….can we sort them? Mrs Green has opened a fruit and veg. shop. How can we help her to sort the fruit and vegetables? Can we identify everyone by their fingerprints? How else can we identify children in the class? Fair test How does changing the colour of the food affect the number of birds visiting our table? Do woodlice move more in dark or light conditions? How does changing the way we plant seeds make a difference to their germination? Which drinks are most harmful to ur teeth? What makes a difference to how quickly the paper changes when we leave it outside?

Do different birds come at different times? Do they choose different food? Do they sing different tunes at different times of day? We’ve been looking at different animals and their teeth. Is there a pattern between what they eat and their teeth shape? I think the leaves are changing colour. Do different trees change at different times? Is there a pattern between height and foot size? Research Why do birds migrate? What attracts bees to flowers? Are zoos a good thing? How can we measure the height of a tree? How can we work out how old the hedge is? How much sleep do we need? What difference would it make if I ate a vegetarian diet? Why do we shiver/ sweat? How do we get chocolate? How are medicines made? What difference has the discovery of penecillin made to our lives?

Where do bubbles go when the wind blows? Pattern seeking The litter collects in ne corner of the playground…..Does the wind always blow in that direction? Spring is starting earlier every year….is that right? Is there any evidence? Fair test It’s icy outside- which of our shoes have the most grip? How does the shape of leaves affect the way they fall? What will affect how well our paper spinners fall? How does changing the parts of our circuit affect the brightness of the bulb?

How can we sort them out? (the way they move; etc) Can we sort our moving toys by the way they are powered? We’ve been on a “push pull walk” around our school and taken photos of different things that we push or pull. How can we sort them? We want to make a circuit- which things make good switches and which don’t? Research How did Egyptians move rocks to make pyramids? How does a hot air balloon fly? How much energy do low energy light bulbs save us?

How do our shadows change over a day? Does the sun rise and set at the same time each day? The moons shape is a banana shape and sometimes a circle. How does it change over a month? It was cold this morning and now it is warm. How does the temperature change over a day/ month/ year? Does the wind always blow in the same direction? Which words on the gravestones are hardest to read? It is the oldest ones? Do buildings change in the same way? How do we know? Identify and classify We’ve been invited to the geology museum to help them with some new rocks. How can we identify and sort the rocks? Can we make a key to identify the planets?
