Forgiveness Offered October 9

Think About It … What are some causes of physical paralysis? How else might people be paralyzed other than physically?  Consider that Jesus cares for the entire person – Today we see him heal physical paralysis – He also gives a man freedom from slavery to sin

Listen for the miracle performed. Luke 5:17-20 (NIV) One day as he was teaching, Pharisees and teachers of the law, who had come from every village of Galilee and from Judea and Jerusalem, were sitting there. And the power of the Lord was present for him to heal the sick. [18] Some men came carrying a paralytic on a mat and tried to take him into the house to lay him before Jesus.

Listen for the miracle performed. [19] When they could not find a way to do this because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him on his mat through the tiles into the middle of the crowd, right in front of Jesus. [20] When Jesus saw their faith, he said, "Friend, your sins are forgiven."

Show Your Faith How did Luke describe the crowd that was listening to Jesus? Who came to see Jesus, and why did they come? What hurdles did not deter their faith in Jesus? Jesus noted their faith. In what ways did the paralytic and his friends demonstrate faith in Christ?

Show Your Faith What do you find significant about the men letting their friend down in the middle of the crowd? Why might we try to come to Jesus secretly where nobody can see us? Consider Jesus’ initial response of forgiving the man’s sins rather than healing his physical problem. In what ways is sin a paralysis?

Show Your Faith How is forgiveness a kind of healing? Why do you think He declared forgiveness first? How can we bring our “paralyzed” friends to Jesus, even if they are unwilling?

Listen for what the scribes and Pharisees said about Jesus. Luke 5:21-26 (NIV) The Pharisees and the teachers of the law began thinking to themselves, "Who is this fellow who speaks blasphemy? Who can forgive sins but God alone?" [22] Jesus knew what they were thinking and asked, "Why are you thinking these things in your hearts?

Listen for what the scribes and Pharisees said about Jesus. [23] Which is easier: to say, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Get up and walk'? [24] But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins...." He said to the paralyzed man, "I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home."

Listen for what the scribes and Pharisees said about Jesus. [25] Immediately he stood up in front of them, took what he had been lying on and went home praising God. [26] Everyone was amazed and gave praise to God. They were filled with awe and said, "We have seen remarkable things today."

Receive His Forgiveness Why did the Pharisees and teachers think that Jesus’ words to the paralytic man were blasphemous? What did Jesus show by responding to what the Pharisees were thinking? Why is it easier to say, “Your sins are forgiven” than to tell a paralyzed person, “You are healed”?

Receive His Forgiveness What was Jesus proving about Himself whenever He healed diseases and forgave sinners? How does this incident illustrate the conditions under which forgiveness is given?

Listen for a criticism about Jesus. Luke 5:29-32 (NIV) Then Levi held a great banquet for Jesus at his house, and a large crowd of tax collectors and others were eating with them. [30] But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law who belonged to their sect complained to his disciples, "Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and 'sinners'?" [31] Jesus answered them, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. [32] I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance."

Jesus Seeks Sinners What was Levi’s first action as a new follower of Jesus? In accepting Levi’s hospitality, what was Jesus accused of doing? To what occupation did Jesus liken His ministry?

Jesus Seeks Sinners So, why did Jesus come? What did Jesus mean by saying that He came to call sinners to repentance and not to call the righteous? How can we follow Jesus’ example of associating with society’s and religion’s outcasts without compromising Christian values?

Application Being forgiven is more important than being healed – Think of that when you pray for people – Many needy people need help in coming to Jesus – Who can you help to Jesus this week?

Application There are hurting people all around us – Depending on how we respond, we can hurt them further, ignore them or help them – Follow Jesus’ model and help them

Application Consider Jesus’ strategy to associate with lost people to win them – This will attract criticism from some – Jesus compared Himself to a doctor whose mission was to heal the sick – Bring someone to the Great Physician
