Free will vs. Fate Copyright This presentation was created following the Fair Use Guidelines for Educational Multimedia. Certain materials are included under the Fair Use exemption of the U.S. Copyright Law. Further use of these materials and this presentation is restricted.

Free will Free and independent choice Voluntary decision belief that the conduct or actions of human beings expresses personal choice and is not simply determined by physical or divine forces

Fate/Determinism ALL facts and events are perfect examples of natural laws (nature or supernatural) ALL events, including human choices and decisions, have causes beyond a person’s control (“god’s will?”)

Fate (otherwise called Determinism) EVERY event, including human thought and behavior and every decision and action, is caused by (determined by) an unbroken chain of prior occurrences or events that set the chain of events in motion

Fate/Determinism continued FATE/Determinism is often understood as ruling out free will. (A person has no choice in the effects of their lives)
