1 Samuel 18:7 “Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands.”

1 Samuel 18:8-9 Saul was very angry; this refrain galled him. “They have credited David with tens of thousands,” he thought, “but me with only thousands. What more can he get but the kingdom?” And from that time on Saul kept a jealous eye on David.

1 Samuel 15:17 “... although you were once small in your own eyes, did you not become the head of the tribes of Israel?”

1 Samuel 13:13-14 “You have not kept the command the Lord your God gave you; if you had, he would have established your kingdom over Israel for all time. But now, your kingdom will not endure; the Lord has sought out a man after his own heart and appointed him leader of his people, because you have not kept the Lord’s command.”

Webster’s definition of Pride “A high or inordinate opinion of one’s own dignity, importance, merit, superiority, whether as cherished in the mind or as displayed in bearing, conduct, etc.”

1 Samuel 26:2-4 So Saul went down to the Desert of Ziph, with his three thousand chosen men of Israel, to search for David. Saul made his camp beside the road on the hill of Hakilah facing Jeshmon, but David stayed in the desert.

1 Samuel 26:2-4 Continued When he saw that Saul had followed him there, he sent out scouts and learned that Saul had definitely arrived.

1 Samuel 26:5-6 Then David set out and went to the place where Saul had camped. He saw where Saul and Abner son of Ner, the commander of the army, had lain down. Saul was lying inside the camp, with the army encamped around him.

1 Samuel 26:5-6 Continued David then asked Ahimelech the Hittite and Abishai son of Zeruiah, Joab’s brother, “Who will go down into the camp with me to Saul?” “I will go with you,” said Abishai.

1 Samuel 26:7-8 So David and Abishai went to the army by night, and there was Saul, lying asleep inside the camp with his spear stuck in the ground near his head. Abner and the soldiers were lying around him.

1 Samuel 26:7-8 Continued Abishai said to David, “Today God has delivered your enemy into your hands. Now let me pin him to the ground with one thrust of my spear; I won’t strike twice.”

Philippians 2:3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility, consider others better than yourself.

Matthew 11:28 Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

1 Samuel 26:9-11 But David said to Abishai, “Don’t destroy him! Who can lay a hand on the Lord’s anointed and be guiltless? As surely as the Lord lives,” he said, “the Lord himself will strike him, either his time will come and he will die, or he will go into battle and perish.”

1 Samuel 26:9-11 Continued “But the Lord forbid that I should lay a hand on the Lord’s anointed. Now get the spear and water jug that are near his head, and let’s go.”

1 Samuel 26:13-14 Then David crossed over to the other side and stood on top of the hill some distance away; there was a wide space between them. He called out to the army and to Abner son of Ner, “Aren’t you going to answer me, Abner?” Abner replied, “Who are you who calls to the king?”

1 Samuel 26:17 Saul recognized David’s voice and said, “Is that your voice David my son?”

1 Samuel 24:19-20 “When a man finds his enemy, does he let him get away unharmed? May the Lord reward you well for the way you treated me today. I know that you will surely be king and that the kingdom of Israel will be established in your hands.”

1 Samuel 26:18 “Why is my lord pursuing his servant? What have I done, and what wrong am I guilty of?”

1 Samuel 26:20 “The king of Israel has come out to look for a flee – as one hunts a partridge in the mountains.”

James 4:6 “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

Proverbs 22:4 “Humility and the fear of the Lord bring wealth and honor and life.”

Matthew 5:5 “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.”

C. S. Lewis “A proud man is always looking down on things and people; and of course, as long as you’re always looking down, you can’t see something that’s above you.”

David’s three ways to a humble life Be patient in tough times View others as better than yourself Be forgiving toward others

Philippians 2:5-8 “Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus, who, being in the very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death – even death on a cross!”

Matthew 11:28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
