After Boudicca’s husband died, the Romans came to ask for taxes. Boudicca didn’t want to pay any money to the Romans. She decided to start an army to fight the Romans. She wanted to get the Romans out of Britain. Many Celtic people wanted to join Boudicca’s army.

What happened in AD 60? Boudicca’s Celtic army marched from Norfolk to Colchester, and attacked the Roman soldiers based there Then they went to London. Many of the Romans ran away, so the Celtic army burned the city. They chased the Romans to a battlefield somewhere in the West Midlands. They started a battle. There were lots more Celts than Romans but the Romans were better warriors, and they won the battle. Boudicca was so ashamed that she drank poison and died. Many of the Celts lost their lives in the battle with the Romans. The Roman governor, Suetonius, lost his job because he had nearly allowed the Celts to defeat the Romans. The Celts who had been fighting had not been able to look after their farms, and so returned home to find that they had no food.
