Genetics: Who Are We? Loren Wilbanks

Content Area: Science Grade Level: 5th Summary: The purpose of this instructional PowerPoint is to understand how genetic information is passed from parent to offspring during reproduction. Learning Objective: Student will view different websites about genetics and answer questions at the end of the presentation with 100% accuracy. Content Standard: GLE 0507.4.1 Describe how genetic information is passed from parents to offspring during reproduction. Accomplishment: SPI 0507.4.1Recognize that information is passed from parent to offspring during reproduction.

What Do You Know About Genetics? Take out a sheet of paper and spend 5 minutes brainstorming about what you know about genetics. When finished click on the video icon below and watch the video. While watching the video write down something you didn’t know about genetics.

Definitions Genetics: The science that studies how traits are inherited. Genes: Characteristics in cells that determine what characteristics will be passed from parents to children. Offspring: The first generation of descendants produced by an mammal. Heredity: The passing of characteristics from parents to children. Traits: Eye color, hair color and skin color. Chromosomes: The structure inside the cell that contains genes. Dominant: A gene that over powers a recessive gene. Recessive: A gene that does not show itself unless it is paired with a like gene.

Offspring Mom Dad Offspring The first generation of decedents produced by a mammal. Mom Dad Offspring

Genetics The science that studies how traits are inherited. What gives the cells the instructions for writing these genes? DNA. What are traits? Traits are called genes which are the cells that determine which characteristics will be passed from parents to children.

DNA DNA provides the information needed to create the genes. DNA is your own genetic makeup. It is what make you different from everyone else! Click on the movie icon above read how the FBI uses DNA to solve crimes. Read through the website and complete the activities.

Self Check Take out a piece of paper and write down what you have learned so far about genetics. (5 minutes) Get with your partners and discuss what you have learned.

Chromosomes The structure inside the cell that contains the genes. Humans have 23 pairs of chromosomes. 46 individual chromosomes that determine each characteristic of a human. Male and Female Chromosomes: Chromosomes Required to be a male are XY. Females have XX.

Dominant and Recessive Genes A dominant gene is a gene that overpowers an recessive gene. Examples: Being able to roll your tongue, blood type, the second toe is the largest , green or hazel eyes are just a few examples. A recessive gene is a gene that does not show itself unless paired with a like gene. Both mom and dad have to have this gene. Examples: Tall, First toe is the longest, blue or gray eyes are just a few examples.

Self Check What is genetics? What are genes? What make up are genes? Name one dominant trait. Name one recessive trait.

Answers The science that studies how traits are inherited. Characteristics in cells that determine what characteristics will be passed from parents to children. DNA Roll your tongue, blood type, the second toe is the largest , green or hazel eyes. First toe is the longest, blue or gray eyes.

Traits Activity With your assigned partner, click on the video icon below, view the list traits and make a list of dominant and recessive traits. You might be surprised to see that you and your partner have some of these traits!

Conclusion We have reviewed the basics of how genetics work and how DNA is the make up for every human being. Students also learned about dominant and recessive traits and how they are passed from parents to offspring
