Hey you! Wake up! We’re being ambushed by the Persian Army! Quick get your gear! I’ll help you don’t worry. Make sure to pick up your cuirass first, your helmet second, and finally your shield by clicking on them. Next

This is a Cuirass. This body armor protects the shoulders, chest, and abdomen. Some even went down farther to protect the upper thigh. Most were made of a material called Lamellar. “Lamellar armor consists of hundreds of small rectangular iron, leather, or bronze plates (scales or lamellae) which are pierced in various locations and laced together into horizontal rows to the proper length needed to construct a particular armor item” (Lamellar Armor, Wikeedia, ). This is your Helmet. It is important. The helmet is made of Bronze and has a horsetail crest at the top. Most armies of antquity had helmets of this nature. The helmet protected its wearer from blows to the head from spears, swords, and arrows. The higher your rank in the army, the more decorative your crest. This is your most important piece of armor. It is called a Hoplon and is where we Hoplites get our name. The large shiled is, “approximately three feet (90 centimeters) in diameter, made of composite wood and bronze,.” (Hoplon, Encyclopedia Britanica, on ) The design on the front would change by clan or town. Ancient Greeks fight in what is called a phalanx where men stand shoulder to shoulder. The shield is important because it protects your left and the right of the man to your left. This make an inpenatrable wall of shields and is why we Spartans are the envy of the Greek World. on Next

Now that you have your gear go join your brothers and snatch victory for the Persians!!! Next

Which was the most important piece of armor a Greek Hoplite had?

Sorry this is Incorrect The helmet does protect your head but it is still not the most important piece of armor. Hint: Think Phalanx Try again

Sorry this is Incorrect The cuirass protects your body and is important but not as important as another piece of armor. Hint: Think Phalanx Try again

Correct!!!! The shield is by far the most important piece of equipment a Spartan can have. With it they can form a phalanx formation and form a wall of shields. It not only protects you but protects the man to your left as well. Next

Which piece of armor was made of a material called Lamellar?

Sorry this is Incorrect The shield was made out of wood with a thin layer of bronze on top. Try again

Sorry this is Incorrect The helmet was made out of bronze not lamellar. Try again

Correct!!!! The cuirass was made of lamellar. Lamellar armor consists of hundreds of small rectangular iron, leather, or bronze plates (scales or lamellae) which are pierced in various locations and laced together into horizontal rows to the proper length needed to construct a particular armor item Next

Which piece of armor varied due to rank?

Sorry this is Incorrect The cuirass did vary in material such as bronze, iron, or leather but it did not vary by rank. Try again

Sorry this is Incorrect All Hoplon shields were made out of wood and bronze. Some had different designs on the front but changed more by clan than by rank. Try again

Correct!!!! The horsehair crest on the top of the helmet would be more elegant the higher the owner was in the military. For example, a private would have no crest, or a small crest, but a general would have a huge flamboyant crest. Next

What was the primary fighting formation of the Ancient Greek World? A.Echelon B.Triangular C.Phalanx

Sorry this is Incorrect Echelon fighting styles as a main stream fighting formation did not exist. It wasn’t until the Roman General Publius Corneluis Scipio Africanus used the Echelon formation to defeat Hannibal at the Battle of Zama in 202 B.C.E. Try again

Sorry this is Incorrect Triangular formation is not even a real battle formation. Try again

Correct!!!! The phalanx formation was used by all Greek armies. The armies of Sparta, Corinth, Thebes, and Athens all used this formation. Congratulations!!! You finished the quiz! CreditsCredits
