Phases of Assessment Diagnostic Formative Summative Assessment FOR, AS, OF Learning

Assessment of Learning Summative assessment designed to certify learning and report to parents and students about their progress in school. Examples include … Unit tests, independent study units, exams, standardized achievement tests.

Assessment for Learning Formative assessment that occurs during instruction to be used in the service of the next stage of learning. Examples include … Questioning techniques, feedback without grades, peer assessment, self-assessment, and the formative use of summative tests as instructional strategies.

Assessment as Learning Assessment that occurs when students personally monitor what they are learning and use the feedback from this monitoring to make adjustments, adaptations, and even major changes in what they understand. Actively involves students and often includes self- and peer-assessment methods.

Assessment for and as Learning: Teacher Responsibilities Plan assessment concurrently and integrate seamlessly with instruction. Share learning goals and success criteria with students at the outset of learning. Gather information about student learning before, during, and near the end of instruction. Use assessment to inform instruction, guide next steps, and help students monitor progress towards achieving their learning goals.

Assessment for and as Learning: Teacher Responsibilities Cont… Analyze and interpret evidence of learning. Give and receive specific and timely descriptive feedback about student learning. Help students to develop peer- and self-assessment skills.
