Abraham – Father Of Faith 3 Abraham – The Liberator Genesis 14

The Evil Empire Genesis 14 1 And it came to pass in the days of Amraphel king of Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of nations, 2 that they made war with Bera king of Sodom, Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, Shemeber king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar). 3 All these joined together in the Valley of Siddim (that is, the Salt Sea). 4 Twelve years they served Chedorlaomer, and in the thirteenth year they rebelled.

The Group Of Four Chedorlaomer king of Elam (Persia / Iran) Amraphel King of Shinar (Babylon / Iraq) Arioch king of Ellasar (possibly Lebanon) Tidal “king of nations” possibly an empire of small nations These were all part of a coalition based on the Satanic empire of Nimrod “a mighty predator before the Lord” who founded Babylon, Nineveh and other great ancient cities and built the tower of Babel. It was a very oppressive regime based on star worship, magic and sorcery.

The Five Foolish Kings The five kings of Sodom and Gomorrah were “small fry” but were very wealthy heads of city-states involved in trade. They decided to rebel against Chedorlaomer and were annihilated as a minor part of a long military campaign conducted in the region.

Giant-Killers 5 In the fourteenth year Chedorlaomer and the kings that were with him came and attacked the Rephaim in Ashteroth Karnaim, the Zuzim in Ham, the Emim in Shaveh Kiriathaim, 6 and the Horites in their mountain of Seir, as far as El Paran, which is by the wilderness. 7 Then they turned back and came to En Mishpat (that is, Kadesh), and attacked all the country of the Amalekites, and also the Amorites who dwelt in Hazezon Tamar.

The Unstoppable Army The Rephaim were the ancient race of giants from which came Goliath The Zuzim, Emim and Horites were similarly gigantic. Chedorlaomer’s army was so powerful that it conquered them. It also defeated the warlike Amalekites and Amorites. One Jewish legend has this army as large as 700,000 men.

The Rebel Coalition Collapses 8 And the king of Sodom, the king of Gomorrah, the king of Admah, the king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar) went out and joined together in battle in the Valley of Siddim 9 against Chedorlaomer king of Elam, Tidal king of nations, Amraphel king of Shinar, and Arioch king of Ellasar—four kings against five. 10 Now the Valley of Siddim was full of asphalt pits; and the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled; some fell there, and the remainder fled to the mountains. 11 Then they took all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah, and all their provisions, and went their way. 12 They also took Lot, Abram’s brother’s son who dwelt in Sodom, and his goods, and departed.

Trapped In A Tar-Pit The rebel kings ended up coming to a sticky end in the tar pits around the battle field. Only the king of Sodom seems to have survived. Abram’s nephew Lot was captured and all his goods were taken as well.

Always In Trouble Lot seems always to be “trouble” for Abram and Abram is always either accommodating him or rescuing him. Lot is a nice guy without wisdom or much personal power. He makes bad choices gets swept up in events and then needs others to fix up his mess. God still loves and rescues Lot – twice Christians however should aim at wisdom, strength, power and personal mastery through faith.

Abram The Liberator 13 Then one who had escaped came and told Abram the Hebrew, for he dwelt by the terebinth trees of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol and brother of Aner; and they were allies with Abram. 14 Now when Abram heard that his brother was taken captive, he armed his three hundred and eighteen trained servants who were born in his own house, and went in pursuit as far as Dan. 15 He divided his forces against them by night, and he and his servants attacked them and pursued them as far as Hobah, which is north of Damascus. 16 So he brought back all the goods, and also brought back his brother Lot and his goods, as well as the women and the people.

A Supernatural Victory Abram’s 318 trained men attack at night and chase Chedorlaomer’s huge imperial army northward for nearly 300 miles! Abram liberates all of Israel, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria This is clearly supernatural and indicates that Abram’s God was greater than those of the Persians and Babylonians and of Nimrod’s occultic practices.

The Creator God Abram did not worship the Sun God or the Moon God but called on the Creator God. It was obvious that Abram’s God gave him the power to defeat Chedorlaomer. And he blessed him and said:       “ Blessed be Abram of God Most High,       Possessor of heaven and earth; 20 And blessed be God Most High,       Who has delivered your enemies into your hand.” The victory was a powerful witness to monotheism and the nature of the True God.

Melchizedek 17 And the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley), after his return from the defeat of Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him.    18 Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was the priest of God Most High. 19 And he blessed him and said:       “ Blessed be Abram of God Most High,       Possessor of heaven and earth; 20 And blessed be God Most High, Who has delivered your enemies into your hand.”    And he gave him a tithe of all.

Melchizedek Blesses Abram Melchizedek, King of Salem (Jerusalem) was a priest of “God Most High” and his name means King of Righteousness, King of Peace He is a mysterious figure that some say was an appearance of Jesus Christ. However Hebrews says he was “like” the son of God and he was also an earthly King.

Melchizedek Blesses Abram - 2 Melchizedek blesses Abram therefore is the superior in the transaction. Abram acknowledges this by giving M. a tenth of all This sets a precedent for tithing to your source of spiritual blessings In the New Testament tithing is not compulsory but is replaced by willing “grace giving”.

Melchizedek Blesses Abram - 3 Abram gives willingly Abram sees Melchizedek’s blessing as worth material sacrifice Abram sees the world as the result of spiritual principles rather than economic principles Abram serves God not Mammon

Abram’s Integrity 21 Now the king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the persons, and take the goods for yourself.” 22 But Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I have raised my hand to the LORD, God Most High, the Possessor of heaven and earth, 23 that I will take nothing, from a thread to a sandal strap, and that I will not take anything that is yours, lest you should say, ‘I have made Abram rich’— 24 except only what the young men have eaten, and the portion of the men who went with me: Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre; let them take their portion.”

The Cost Abram had just fought a major war and kept 318 men on the march for 300 miles. He had just given a tenth of everything away He was “out of pocket” But he refused to take any funds from a dubious source God’s honor outweighs gold and silver

The Foolishness Of The Wise Wise people seem to be “foolish” by this world’s standards We never see Abram acting in a grasping opportunistic way. The false assumption of the fixed size pie Spiritual people see an expanding abundant supply Abram simply relies on God’s ever-flowing abundance.

Lessons For Us God gives great victories to those He loves. God’s blessing is worth sacrificing for We are to be honorable in all our relationships We are to have boundaries and maintain integrity. We are not to see a “fixed size pie” but to rely on God’s ever-increasing abundance
