AMENITY VALUES L. I To recognise what an amenity value is and to make judgements about amenity values around our school STARTER: Think back to yesterday’s DVD – “Neighbours at War”. What do you think happened to Jeff and all his junk in the end?

WHAT ARE AMENITY VALUES? Amenity values are the natural or physical qualities and characteristics of an area that contribute to people’s appreciation and enjoyment of that particular environment. They are something that makes a place more pleasant to be in. It is accepted that different places have different amenity values depending on the use of the place. For example, noisy farm machinery is accepted as part of the countryside environment, yet would be totally unacceptable in an inner city residential situation.

CAN YOU WORK OUT WHAT AN AMENITY VALUE IS? Look at the sheet you have been given. Circle for each statement whether you think it would be TRUE or FALSE when thinking of a residential (neighbourhood) environment, such as where you live.

AMENITY VALUES IN OUR SCHOOL We are now going to do an inspection of the school and you will have to decide how good the amenity values of certain places around the school are. 1= terrible, it is extremely unpleasant 5 = great, it is an extremely pleasant area of the school

OUR RESULTS…. Add up your total score for the whole school. Be prepared to share your results when requested. We will now work out the average score for the class. How does this compare with your total score? What did you rate as the best areas? What did you rate as the worst areas?
