RDA & Serials

RDA Toolkit CONSER RDA Cataloging Checklist for Textual Serials (DRAFT) CONSER RDA Core Elements Where’s that Tool? CONSER RDA Cataloging – Interim Period

1.“Bridge” training (Available fall 2012) – Transitioning from AACR2 to RDA New description Maintenance 2.Basic RDA serials cataloging (Available early 2013) CONSER Training

Pre-cataloging decisions

Serial pre-cataloging decisions If online resource, separate description or provider-neutral record or link on record for print? Applying CONSER Standard Record guidelines? Adding more elements? If covered by existing AACR2 record, adding information or converting record to RDA? Deciding if covered by existing record or if creating a new description is needed

Need a new description? Change in mode of issuance Change in media type Major change in title proper Change in responsibility requiring change in identification of the serial work Change in edition statement indicating significant change in subject or scope

Elements

FRBR & MARC 1XX/240 = work, expression , 490 = manifestation 300 = expression, manifestation other 3XX = work, expression, manifestation 5XX = work, expression, manifestation = work, expression = work, expression, manifestation 8XX = work, expression [& manifestation]

Transcribed Manifestation Elements Title proper and parallel title proper Other title information and parallel title other title information Statement of responsibility and parallel statement of responsibility Edition information Numbering information Place of publisher, distributor, and manufacturer Name of publisher, distributor, and manufacturer Series information other than ISSN

Title Don’t correct errors for monographs = no more “[sic]” or “[i.e., ____]” – give note to explain Do correct errors for serials and integrating resources to have a stable title 245 $a Zoology studies 246 $i Misspelled title on number 1: $a Zooology studies

Statement of responsibility Transcribe as found (no longer the AACR2 “rule of 3”) $a … / $c by Division of Health, Division of Safety, Division of Labor, and Division of Education $a … / $c by Division of Health [and three others]

Numbering Transcribe terms and months as on the resource Can give as formatted or unformatted 362 field 362 0# $a Volume X, number 1- OR 362 1# $a Began with January 2010 issue.

ISSN of series and subseries Guidelines are generally the same as those for Numbering of serials MARC 490 $x now repeatable 490 $a Title of main series, $x ISSN of main series. $a Title of subseries, $x ISSN of subseries.

Recorded Manifestation Elements Date of publication, distribution, manufacture Copyright date Mode of issuance Frequency Identifier of the manifestation (usually ISSN) Key title Notes about elements Issues or part used as basis of description Notes about changes over time Common carrier characteristics Extent Dimensions Carrier type Characteristics for other than volumes as carriers

Basis for Identification if not based on first issue or part – “Identification of the resource based on” wording in RDA examples – “Description based on” also can be used MARC 588 field

Publication Dates Give beginning and ending dates of publication if have first/last issue, part, or iteration 260 $c If the first and/or last issue, part, or iteration is not available, supply an approximate date or dates of publication 260 $c 1998-[2010?]

Publication Dates If date or dates cannot be approximated, don’t record date(s) of publication – do not give “[date of publication not identified]”

Extent (300 $a) Core element if the resource is complete or if the total extent is known Alternative at : omit extent for a resource that is not yet complete (or if the total number of units issued is unknown)

Carrier type, etc. Developed with ONIX publishing community: – Content type -- RDA MARC 336 field – Media type -- RDA MARC 337 field * – Carrier type -- RDA MARC 338 field * Not core

Authorized Access Points Not abbreviating “Department” (should not have abbreviated in AACR2 headings) Conferences – Retain frequency in the name – Omit location, numbers, and dates

Relationships

No core relationships Decisions to include relationships are based on cataloger’s judgment and on cataloging policy.

Relationships between Group 1 and Group 2 Chapters 18 to 22 provide guidelines for recording relationships between Group 1 entities (i.e., work, expression, manifestation, and item) and Group 2 entities (i.e., person, family and corporate body). Chapter 17 of RDA is not currently being applied.

Relationships between Group 1 and Group 2 Relationships are expressed by providing an identifier or an authorized access point for the person, family or corporate body In the MARC environment, designators are added in subfield $e at the end of authorized access points. When a serial publication has a change in responsibility that does not require a new description, additional access points for Group 2 entities associated with later issues (e.g., different issuing bodies for later issue of journal) can be given.

Creator Element Chapter 19 Is a relationship to the work being identified … not an attribute of the work If more than one creator at same time: 110 $a First-named creator on issue, $e author. 710 $a Second-named creator on same issue, $e author.

Corporate body as creator Categories of works given in RDA (similar to AACR2 21.1B2) -- not roles of bodies Includes government and religious officials for some categories of works Corporate body takes precedence over a first- named person or family as creator

Common Group 2 designators for serial work relationships Creator roles – Author – Compiler (e.g., of a directory or bibliography) Non-creator roles – Host institution – Issuing body – Sponsoring body

Common Group 2 designators for serial expression relationships Chapter 20 Appendix I Contributor is the general term for all roles relating to an expression Possible serial contributor roles: – Editor of complication (for an editor of a journal) – Translator

Common Group 2 designators for serial manifestation relationships Chapter 21 No relationship designators for these roles because they are elements Possible roles for serial manifestations – Producer (unpublished resources) – Publisher – Distributor – Manufacturer

Common Group 2 designators for serial item relationships For relationships to a single copy of a manifestation Not common for serial resources – Special collection or rare serial (e.g., note relationship to former owner or current custodian)

Relationships within Group 1 Chapter 24: General guidelines Chapter 25: Related Works Chapter 26: Related Expressions Chapter 27: Related Manifestations Chapter 28: Related Items

Chapter 24 – General Guidelines MARC environment: – Designator added in subfield $i at the beginning of the authorized access point – Indicated in the MARC linking fields Designators for Chapters in Appendix J – Organized by categories of relationships, then general relationships followed in some cases by specific relationships

Chapter 25: Related Works Common serial work relationship categories: – Whole part: in a monographic series, contains another work (in each or some of the issues) – Accompanying: supplement to, is a supplement – Sequential: continuation, merger, split, absorption, etc.

Common relationship designators for serial works Appendix J: Whole part: “contains (work)”, “in series (work)” Accompanying: “supplement (work)”, “supplement to (work)” Sequential: “absorbed (work)”, “continues (work)”, “merger of (work)”, “continued by,” etc.

Chapter 26: Related Expressions Common serial expression relationships: – Translations – Language editions

Common relationship designators for serial expressions Appendix J: – Derivative: “translation of”, “translated as” – No specific designator for language editions … yet

Chapter 27: Related Manifestations Common serial manifestation relationships: – Different – Reproductions – Special issues – Issued with

Common Relationship Designators for Serial Manifestations Appendix J: – Equivalent: “also issued as”, “mirror site”, “reproduction as”, “reprint of (manifestation)” – Whole-part: “special issue of “, “insert” – Accompanying: “Issued with”, “Filmed with manifestation”

Chapter 28: Related Item Local relationships Common serial item relationships: – Reproductions of specific items – Bound with – Filmed with

Common Relationship Designators for Serial Items Appendix J: – Equivalent: “reproduction of (item)”, “digital transfer of (item), “electronic reproduction of”, “reprint of (item) – Accompanying: “bound with”, “filmed with (item)”
