Unit 2 Week 1

 Cause and Effect  Prior Knowledge  Word Structure  Vocabulary

 Prior knowledge is what a reader already knows about a subject. Good readers use their prior knowledge to help them understand information as they read.

 The effect is the action that happens.  The cause is why it happens.  Example: The girl got dirty because she fell in a mud puddle.  Cause: because she fell in a mud puddle ▪ (Why it happened)  Effect: The girl got dirty ▪ (What happened)

 Prefixes and suffixes have their own meanings. When you see an unfamiliar word, check to see if a prefix or suffix has been added to the base word. This will help you figure out a word’s meaning.

IIt had a backboard. IIt did not have a net. IIt was 16 feet high.

SShe wanted to embarrass the boys. SShe thought the boys would not believe that she knew how to play. SShe thought the boys would not let her play if they knew she was a girl.

TThey might refuse to let her play TThey might realize that she was a girl. TThey might think she did not know much about basketball.

JJoanna jumped high and dunked the ball. EEveryone realized that Jo was Joanna. TThe boys asked Joanna to play basketball with them.

SShe was holding on to the rim. SShe had made the perfect dunk. TThey discovered she was a girl.

JJoanna prevented T.J. from making a basket. TThey boys asked Joanna to play with them. TThe boys gave Joanna a nickname.

 Girls can be good athletes, too.

 He is telling her that she does not need to hide that she is a girl because he accepts who she is and knows she is a good player.

 T.J.’s attitude changed the most because he went from being angry with Joanna to admiring her skills and inviting her to come back to play basketball again.
