How do they live? Badgers vs. Mushrooms Sara Cathey

PURPOSE: To compare and contrast the ways that the badger and mushrooms(fungi) live. Topics included will be: transport, excretion, respiration, regulation, nutrition, synthesis, reproduction, and growth and development

homeostasishomeostasis. All living things have ranges of tolerance that limit where they can live and maintain their internal environment. Homeostasis is the maintenance of their proper internal environment. Although Fungi and Mammals differ greatly in how they maintain homeostasis, they also perform many of the same functions.

My Living Organisms Club Mushroom Kingdom: Fungi Phylum: Basidiomycota Class:Agariccomycotes Order:Agariceles Family: Trichlomataceae Genus:Pleurotus Species: ostreatus Badger Kingdom Animalia Phylum: Chordata Class: Mammalia Order: Carnivora Family: Muustelidea Genus: Taxidea Species: taxus

Transport Club Mushroom Transported from place to place using spores. These mushrooms grow, but they are sessile (they do not move around). Oyster Mushroom Badger Badgers are mammals that are mobile. North America has only one species that ranges from the mountains to the prairies. Badger

Nutrition Oyster Mushroom Fungus Grows on dead and living trees (usually hardwoods) Dissolves organic material and then absorbs it. Fungi can have a symbiotic relationship with an algae (lichen) which carries on photosynthesis for the fungi. mushroom expert Badger Carnivore Fabulous diggers Their dominant prey are pocket gophers and ground squirrels badgers catch most of their food by digging. They can tunnel after ground dwelling rodents with amazing speed. They have been known to cache food. Badger

Respiration Oyster Mushroom Heterotroph Use oxygen for cellular respiration. Glucose + Oxygen yields Carbon dioxide and water. Badger Heterotroph Uses oxygen for cellular respiration Glucose + Oxygen yields Carbon dioxide and water.

Reproduction Oyster Mushroom Asexually by budding or spore formation. Sexually in fruiting body called basidia. Badger Sexual reproduction involves the combining of genetic material from two parent organisms.

Excretion Oyster Mushroom Mushrooms are respirators. All living things excrete. Badger Excretion is the removal of waste products, such as carbon dioxide. If carbon dioxide is not removed from the excretory organs, then it would result in poisoning of the system or death.

Regulation Oyster Mushroom Mushrooms thrive on wet terrains. Often you see mushrooms pop up after a good rain. Badger Badgers live usually in dry areas. You could find them in open grasslands, fields, or pastures. Badgers don’t necessarily hibernate they torpor, which means in the winter the cycles last about 29 hours. Badgers are also carnivorous.

Growth and Development Oyster Mushroom Mushrooms grow in a damp terrain. Also mushrooms grow very rapidly. Mushrooms are a fungus. Badger Badgers are born helpless and blind. The mother builds a den to protect her young. Her young may start coming out of the den as early as 5 to 6 weeks old. Then they begin to grow their thick fur.
