New Faculty Library Orientation Asa H. Gordon Library Ivy Brannen and Lauren McMillan Fall 2012 In conjunction with the HBCU Library Alliance Leadership Institute

As a vital entity of the University, a program will be implemented that will assist all “new faculty” within the library. The orientation will focus on how the library can enhance their courses and research through library instruction, eLearning assistance, and collection development. The purpose of this project is to develop a program that ensures new faculty are knowledgeable about the services offered by the Asa H. Gordon Library. This relationship will establish lines of communication between new faculty and library staff. Ideally, these sessions will become a regular part of the information faculty receive upon joining the University. Abstract Summary

This project was designed to provide new faculty with information on the library’s resources that would enable them to incorporate these resources into their courses. Additionally, it was observed that the faculty were often unclear about library policies such as requesting materials, putting items on course reserves, and the availability of information literacy library instruction. A new faculty library orientation was created in hopes that these issues could be addressed while promoting communication and establishing a stronger rapport between the library and the university’s three colleges: the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS), the College of Science and Technology (COST), and the College of Business Administration (COBA). Project Goal

Outcomes and Innovations 22 out of 27 new permanent faculty attended the sessions For those who did not attend, an effort was made to reach out to them following the sessions Overall, orientation evaluations were very positive

Outcomes and Innovations New/different approach may be necessary to getting contact information Scheduling/timing of sessions

In the Future Focus on gaining attendance of new temporary and adjunct faculty Divide and conquer: – Share planning duties among librarians Librarians can be responsible for getting the contact information for new faculty from their liaison area(s) Librarians can be responsible for different parts of the presentation
