E-Portfolios in I.T.E Using electronic portfolios to demonstrate achievement of professional standards – effective and efficient? Helen Bird BA(Hons), MA, FHEA

E-Portfolios in I.T.E Background  Sept PGCE Early Years course implemented. Paper portfolios used to demonstrate achievement of professional standards (known as the PDJ).  Sept 2005 – Paper portfolios continued to be used for the PDJ. Investigation into using e-portfolios undertaken.  Sept 2006 – Use of e-portfolios for the PDJ implemented (Pilot Year)

E-Portfolios in I.T.E Background  Sept 2007 – E-portfolios for the PDJ continued to be used. Introduction of PDAs. Use of e-portfolios to support job applications trialled. Ofsted pronounced our use of e- portfolios as “outstanding” whilst the external examiner describes them as “cutting edge”.  Sept 2008 – E-portfolios and PDAs continued to be used. Trial of using mobile technologies to support e-portfolios successful.

E-Portfolios in I.T.E Background  Sept 2009 – All of our trainees use PebblePad in their job applications. Very positive feedback from headteachers. School mentors take more of an active role in using the PDJ with trainees to encourage reflection in school experience. Use of PDAs/mobile phones with PebblePad continued. Targets/Review points added to PDJ Webfolio. Many trainees using Pebblepad with children whilst on school experience.

E-Portfolios in I.T.E Survey Results 05/06 cohort In end of course questionnaires 88% of trainees had a negative opinion of the paper- based portfolios overall. Only 24% of trainees thought that they would use their paper-based portfolio PDJ as part of their NQT year and beyond. 92% of trainees said that they would prefer an e-portfolio to a paper-based portfolio.

E-Portfolios in I.T.E Survey Results 08/09 cohort In end of course questionnaires only 16% of trainees had a negative opinion of the e- portfolios & PDAs overall. 92% of trainees thought that they would use their PDJ as part of their NQT year and beyond. 76% of trainees said that the e-portfolio contributes effectively to the job application process.

E-Portfolios in I.T.E Demonstration PDJ Job application portfolio Using a PDA to support e-portfolios Using Pebblepad with children

Job application Webfolio

E-Portfolios in I.T.E Using PDAs with e-portfolios

Using Pebblepad with children

E-Portfolios in I.T.E Benefits More reflection by the trainees, tools within PebblePad to aid reflection, transition and progression within learning made obvious Less duplication of paperwork and easier to transport Easier access to PDJs by staff/mentors Important documents always available and not mislaid Easy utilisation in the future – job applications, career entry profiles

E-Portfolios in I.T.E Difficulties Trainee and staff reluctance to use new technology Occasional technical difficulty due to the size of the trainee’s portfolios Internet connection essential Lack of access to scanners Using a PDA to support the e-portfolio

E-Portfolios in I.T.E The PDJ Webfolio Today Sept 2010 – Trainees to be issued with netbooks to use along their PDAs. PDJ Webfolio to be used as a graded assessment for Professional Development Studies (PDS) module. Any questions?
