Writing & Balancing Equations Types of Reactions
Learning Objectives Identify different types of chemical reactions Writing & Balancing Equations
Synthesis reaction – a reaction in which two or more reactants combine to form one product Decomposition reaction – a reaction in which one reactant breaks down into two or more products Types of Reactions
Single-replacement reaction – a reaction in which a more reactive element replaces a similar, but less reactive, element in a compound – Ex) A more reactive metal replaces a less reactive metal – Ex) A more reactive halogen replaces a less reactive halogen – Reaction will not occur if the element that is not in compound is less reactive than the similar element that is in compound Types of Reactions
Activity series – a reference table that lists elements in order of the their reactivity Types of Reactions
Double-replacement reaction – a reaction in which two compounds break up into ions and change the cation or anion they are bonded to, forming two new compounds Neutralization reaction – a reaction between an acid and a base that forms a salt (an ionic compound that can be formed as a result of an acid-base reaction) and often water Types of Reactions HA + BOH → BA + Water
Combustion reaction – a reaction in which a compound reacts with oxygen gas and releases energy in the form of light and/or heat Types of Reactions
