Fusion Energy Division (FED) Mission This division promotes the development and timely introduction of fusion energy as a sustainable energy source with favorable economic, environmental, and safety attributes. The division cooperates with other organizations on common issues of multidisciplinary fusion science and technology, conducts professional meetings, and disseminates technical information in support of these goals. Members focus on the assessment and resolution of critical developmental issues for practical fusion energy applications. Division Membership Trend

Division Membership

Division Finances The FED main source of funding is TOFE meeting profit. TOFE alternates from stand alone to embedded. Standalone profits are more than double that of embedded meetings. The 20 th TOFE will be held as a standalone Class I meeting in Nashville, August 2012 The FED has few sessions at national meetings.

Division Finances The FED is saving to endow a Student Scholarship The FED confers Honors/Awards every 2 years: student Best Paper, Outstanding Achievement and Technical Accomplishment - the next awards will be at the 20 th TOFE meeting in August 2012 The FED supports ANS student travel to ANS meetings, and we support the annual student conference 2012 Starting budget48268 Dues allocation1794 Meeting profit~9000 (ICENES-15, 2011) Award cash prizes1500 Nat’l meeting phone costs~600 Student support: TOFE travel Students for Nat’l meetings Annual student conference NEED donation500 Other~500 Ending budget43162

Division Contributions to Society The FED released a statement to Congress about fusion research funding in April 2012 FED Chair sits on the US DOE Fusion Energy Sciences Advisory Committee for the term of office The FED has an informal working relationship with the IEEE Plasma Physics Society FED promotes and supports non-meeting publications in Fusion Science and Technology

Summary The FED is a strong Division with a slowly growing membership The FS&T journal is respected in the fusion community Our near-term future action is to reach a $60k endowment for a student scholarship
