Online Functional Behavioural Assessment

EFFECTIVE INTERVENTION  Positive Behavioural Support is an effective approach to supporting people with challenging behaviour  PBS Interventions need to be based on understanding why behaviours occur (via Functional Assessment)

CLINICAL PRACTICE GUIDELINES Challenging behaviour: a unified approach. Clinical and service guidelines for supporting people with learning disabilities who are at risk of receiving abusive or restrictive practices. Royal College of Psychiatrists, British Psychological Society and Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (2007) ‘ A correlation has been found between carrying out a functional analysis and successful outcome, measured by reduced challenging behaviour.....This should therefore be the approach of choice where challenging behaviour is severe and the most urgent target for intervention.’

OUTCOMES OF FUNCTIONAL ASSESSMENT  A clear description of the challenging behaviours presented by a person  A clear description of the events, times, and situations when these challenging behaviours do and do not occur  A statement of identification of the outcomes that the behaviour achieve for the person  Summary statements that describe the relationships between the above  Direct observations that help verify these statements.

SOME CURRENT FUNCTIONAL ASSESSMENT TOOLS FAST (Iwata, 2005)QABF (Matson & Vollmer, 1995)MAS (Durand & Crimmins, 1992 )CAI (McAtee et al, 2004)Functional Assessment Interview Form (O’Neil et al., 1987)Behaviour Assessment Guide (Willis et al., 1993)ABC Recordings (discrete/continuous)Interval, partial intervalDirect behavioural observation (MTS)Analogue All tend to cover slightly different aspects of FA, some very brief, (others not!). Comprehensive assessment therefore requires multiple tools and an ability to ‘knit’ results together.

Web based functional assessment and intervention planning..that attempts to address strengths and weaknesses in existent methodologies and within a single tool...and which does the knitting for you!

PBSpro is accessed by clicking on the PBSpro tab here

PBSpro acts as a virtual psychologist. It generates a detailed behavioural report based on your understanding of why behaviours are occurring and allows you to conduct observations to test out the accuracy of your hypotheses. It is designed to help you put together all the information you have about a person and to structure this information in such a way that the reasons behind their behaviour challenges become more apparent.

PBSpro brings Positive Behavioural Support within everyone's grasp - parents, teachers, support staff and professionals - by taking you through a step-by-step process of conducting a Functional Behavioural Assessment, collecting direct behavioural observations and producing a PBS plan. To learn more, visit our website where you will be able to see illustrative reports and assessments generated via the programme. Click here to register to use PBSpro
