Negative sentences

Ne ---pas To make a sentence negative the words ‘ne’ and ‘pas’ must both go into the sentence on either side of the verb. Je ne suis pas anglaise. (I am not English) ‘suis’ is the form of the verb for ‘je’ from the verb etre (to be). Hint: to find the verb it will usually be the word that follows a pronoun (je/tu/il/elle/nous/vous/ils/elles or ce in the case of c’est – it is). Pronouns tell you who is associated with the action or state of being expressed by the verb.

Ne... Pas before a vowel Whenever ‘ne’ goes before a vowel it becomes n’ Il n’est pas anglais (he is not English) Elles n’aiment pas les sports (they don’t like sports)

Ne ---pas When you remove ne---pas, the sentence becomes positive Elles ne sont pas anglaises (they are not English) Elles ne sont pas anglaises (they are English)
