시상계획 대상: 1팀(각 언어부문) 최우수상: 1팀(각 언어부문) 우수상: 2팀(각 언어부문) *단 본선합격 및 수료증은 본선진출 전원에게 수여

팀원 별 역할 입론(각 팀별 6분): 논제 정의 및 논제관련 배경상황(사회상황) 설명, 자신의 팀의 근거 소개 및 세부설명(구체적인 통계 자료 및 예시 필요) 반론(각 팀별 6분): 앞 팀의 입론 반박(근거위주로), 자신의 팀이 반박당한 점 재반박, 최종적으로 자신의 팀의 논제 재강조 교차조사(각 팀별 3분): 상대팀의 근거를 위주로 질문(반박의 성격을 가지고 있는 질문임), 자신의 논제의 타당성 보장을 위해 교차조사의 질의응답이 매우 중요함. 교차조사의 질문 및 대답은 각 팀의 입론과 반론 담당이 해야함(단, 질의와 응답의 담당이 달라도 됨.) 최종변론(각 팀별 5분): 자신의 팀의 입장 재정리, 강조 및 호소

Korean Youth Debate Championship towards Unification Rules & Procedures

Schedule 6월 16일~7월 13일: Registration for preliminary Rounds (send applications to beyondunification@gmail.com ) 7월 14일~7월 15일: Judging period 7월 16일: Announce finalists(8 teams for each division)

Awards Grand Champion awards: 1 team Grand finalist awards: 1 team Semi-Finalist awards: 2 team *Awards will be given to only the top 4 teams, but all teams who passed the preliminaries will receive a certificate of participation

Appropriate Attire School uniform/formal clothes

What do I bring to the tournament? Paper and pen Single functioning stopwatch Printed materials for the prep round

What can I use during prep time and debates? Prep time: Nothing except stopwatch, paper, almanac, and dictionary! No cell phones, laptops, or outside help During debates: Prepped rounds: printed materials are allowed Impromptu rounds: no printed materials You may not use cell phones or ipods as stopwatch

Judging Criteria: The three M’s Matter, Manner, Method

Arguments Matter Analysis 3 to 5 arguments is good It shouldn’t consist of assertions! You need Analysis Evidence– make sure they are relevant to your case!

Rebuttals Matter You take down the opponent’s arguments! Attack the logic Attack the evidence

Ex) THW ban death penalties Proposition(Government) Violation of Human Rights Not Feasible in current society Other alternatives Opposition Those who have received the death penalty deserve what they have done Social Message(Deterrent) No stronger punishment

Vocal Style Manner Clarity Appropriate speed Fluency and use of language

Manner Body Language Posture Eye contact

Method Your speech should have a beginning, a middle, and an end In the beginning, give us an outline In the end, summarize!

Speaker Roles Opposition Proposition Argue against the motion Leader of Opposition- 6 minutes Deputy Leader of Opposition- 6 minutes Whip- 6 minutes Reply – 3 minutes Argue against the motion Proposition Prime Minister-6 minutes Deputy Prime Minister-6 minutes Whip- 6 minutes Reply – 3 minutes Argue in favor of the motion

Prime Minister Define the Motion/Introduction/Context Define the key terms of the motion itself, briefly explain about the status quo of the motion and the motion itself(significance of debating it) Clearly state your team’s stance Split(Argument split) Arguments In a three argument case, the prime minister would most likely take the first one/two most important arguments

Leader of Opposition Introduction/team stance If there are issues with the definitions, bring them up Rebuttals of the Prime Minister’s speech Split(Argument Split) Arguments In a three argument case, the leader of opposition would take the first one/two most important arguments

Deputy Prime Minister Summary of the debate briefly Rebuttals(the main part) Arguments In a three argument case, the DPM would take the last argument. If your team has more than 3 arguments, DPM takes the last one or two arguments

Deputy Leader of Opposition Summary of the debate briefly Rebuttals(main part) Arguments In a three argument case, the DLO would take the last argument. If your team has more than 3 arguments, DLO takes the last one or two arguments

Government/Opposition Whip Introduction(summarize your side’s arguments) Clashes Main points where both sides disagreed Usually three clashes Persuade the adjudicators why your team has won the clashes(specific explanation required)

Government/Opposition Reply Emphasize the main reasons why your team has won the debate Restate your team’s arguments and strongly argue that your team has taken home Recommend using quotes or catchy phrases The 1st or 2nd speaker of each team should give a reply speech The Opposition starts first(Reverse in precedence)

Point of Information(POI) When you have objections/questions during the opposite side’s speeches, get up and say things like Ex) point of information, sir, ma’am You cannot give P.O.I.s during the first and last minute of your opponent’s speech
