New Unit: Analytical Reading You will need: Readers’ Notebook Post its Your novel Writing implement

Analytical Reading One of the most important things you will learn this year is how to perform critical analysis on your book.

What is Analytical Reading? Performing and “In- Depth” examination of your book. Then you will use evidence to support your analysis.

Analytical Lenses You can choose different “LENSES” to analyze a book. Today we will work with CHARACTER ANALYSIS. THIS IS BREAKING DOWN A MAIN CHATRACTER IN-DEPTH

How to Analyze Character 1. Begin to recognize patterns in behavior Example: Harry Potter often isolates himself because of a fear of getting others hurt). Evidence: In The Deathly Hallows Harry attempts to go find the horcruxes by himself. He does not want Hermione or Harry to come with him.

How to Analyze Character 2. Notice when a character is “out of character.” Example: Harry Potter tries to attack Bellatrix LeStrange. He even casts an unforgivable curse at her. This is out of character because Harry is not a killer, and usually tries to stun bad guys. If he murders them, what separate him from them?

Your Task BEGIN ANALYZING YOUR CHARACTER IN- DEPTH USING GUIDING QUESTIONS. Provide proof – find text evidence and put in readers’ notebook. POST IT AND WRITE AN ENTRY
