Do Now Depressions in the ocean floor are called trenches, which are the deepest parts of the ocean. Time for Kids 9/26/14 (Thanks Krista) Mariana Trench: 36,070 ft Tonga Trench: 35,702 ft Red= only if you have time 1.) Convert the depth of the Mariana Trench to inches. 2.) Find the depth difference of the two trenches. 3.) Find the total ft. of the trenches. Convert to miles.

10/1/ B Intro to Fractions & Estimating Products In this section, we will learn how to estimate products of fractions using compatible numbers and rounding.

Fraction- part of a whole

Method: For estimating a product of a fraction & whole number use compatible numbers (FDC) – Looking for “quick” & “easy” numbers

Remember… Compatible numbers: – numbers that are close in value to the actual numbers and easy to add, subtract, multiply, or divide mentally

Example 1 Find a multiple of 5 close to and 5 are compatible numbers since 30 ÷ 5 = 6.  6

Example 2 16 and 4 are compatible numbers since 16 ÷ 4 = 4.

Method for estimating products of fractions Rounding to 0, ½, or 1 -If the numerator is -almost as large as the denominator, round up ⅞ rounds to 1 -much smaller than the denominator, round down ⅛ rounds to 0

Example 3 → 1 × 0 1 × 0 = 0

Example 4 Estimate the area of the square. → 7 × 7 = 49 The area is about 49 in 2. Round to the nearest whole number.

Exit Ticket: Your Turn

1) 2) 3) 4) 11 × 11 = 121; about 121 ft 2
