A MAP OF EARTH'S TECTONIC PLATES

DIVERGENT PLATE BOUNDARY: - Plates move away from the mid-ocean ridge due to the direction the convection currents in the asthenosphere are traveling. -Sea-floor spreading happens here.

THE RED SEA: - This is an example of a Divergent Plate Boundary. -The African and Arabian plates are moving in opposite directions away from the mid-ocean ridge that runs through the center of this sea. -The Red Sea gets slightly larger each year due to the sea-floor spreading that happens here. `

CONVERGENT PLATE BOUNDARIES 1. Oceanic-Oceanic 2. Continental-Continental 3. Oceanic-Continental Questions to think about: -What happens at each of these types of convergent boundaries? -What features will you find on the Earth's surface at each of these 3 convergent boundaries?

Oceanic-Oceanic Convergent Plate Boundaries The denser oceanic crust subducts forming a trench above the subduction zone.

CONTINENT-CONTINENT CONVERGENT PLATE BOUNDARY Continental crust will not subduct, results in the formation of a mountain range. Mountain Range

CONTINENT-CONTINENT CONVERGENT PLATE BOUNDARY

- When an oceanic plate converges with continental, the denser oceanic plate subducts. - This forms a trench above the subduction zone that runs parallel to the coastline and a volcanic mountain range along the continent's coast.

Oceanic-Continental Convergent Plate Boundary When an oceanic plate converges with continental, the denser oceanic plate subducts. This forms a trench above the subduction zone in the ocean adjacent to the coastline and a mountain range along the continent's coast. The Andes Mountain Range The Peru-Chile Trench

TRANSFORM PLATE BOUNDARY

THE SAN ANDREAS FAULT - This is an example of a transform plate boundary. -The 2 sides of this boundary move passed each other in opposite-horizontal directions. `

THE SAN ANDREAS FAULT - This is an example of a transform plate boundary. -The 2 sides of this boundary move passed each other in opposite-horizontal directions.
