What is Theme? Theme= central message,idea, or lesson about life that the author wants the reader to see there can be more than one theme in a piece of literature (as long as it can be supported) should be universal where the majority of society can relate to them Two Types of Themes: Stated Themes – themes that are directly told to the reader * Ex. Children’s books Implied Themes – themes that are not directly told to the reader (must be inferred) *Ex. Anne Frank, “Tell-Tale Heart”

Practice When Cayden transferred to our high school from a fancy private school, Shelby was assigned the job of showing him around the building. First, she showed him the trophy case which was full and gleaming with gold metal. Cayden was not impressed. He claimed that his trophy case at his last school was twice as big and much more crowded. Next, Shelby showed him the swimming pool; however, Cayden could care less, for he compared it to his previous school’s which was much bigger and more modern and advanced. Shelby reluctantly continued to show the new student around the school despite that he showed disappointment at everything. The last thing that Shelby showed Cayden was the front door of the school. She told him that he would like this door best because he could walk through it and go back to where he truly belongs.

Teenage girls don’t have the same patience or self confidence that most boys do. D. Making friends isn’t always easy under certain circumstances.

Practice Alan had very few responsibilities, but one was to clean his room every week. It didn’t take too long, but Alan still disdained this chore. One day, Alan thought of a way to save time. Rather than put everything back in place, he decided to pile all of his belongings in the floor of his closet. His mom would think he has being obedient, and it would save a fraction of time. However, the piles that he built began to grow uncontrollably. A month later, Alan’s friend wanted to practice playing baseball after school. When Alan went in his room to get his glove, he realized it wasn’t where he thought it was and must be in the closet. As he opened the door, Alan’s eyes grew large while he scanned the contents of the pile beneath his feet. He dug and dug but still couldn’t find the missing item, and his room got messier as a consequence. By the time he finally found his glove, it was dark and Alan was ordered by his mother to finish the mess he made before he could eat dinner.

Which theme best fits the story? A. Cleaning is an important chore that all most learn and experience. B. Finding or creating shortcuts will always result in a positive outcome. C.
