For exploration …  What are bibliometrics?  What are the different measures?  Where can you find the data?  Why do we need to know about them?

What are bibliometrics?  Quantify research  Often make use of citation counts Different measures  Relate to journals  Relate to researchers individuals or groups

Where can you find basic data?  Web of Science impact factors, citation counts, h- index 9,500 journals 12,000 conferences pa  Scopus citation counts, h-index 16,500 journals, 3.6 m conference items  (Google Scholar) Publish or Perish h-index, g-index etc coverage????

H-index  Examples to try different data sources & subjects  Issues to keep in mind NB support  Note key reactions & comments  Decide on 1 to share with the other groups  feedback

More complex data? Benchmarking, analysis etc  Journal impact factors by WoS subject area  Discussion of normalisation issues arising from REF bibliometric pilot study 9/09_39/09_39c.pdf 9/09_39/09_39c.pdf  Research output analysis tools InCites Thomson Reuters SciVal Elsevier Spotlight=performance Funding ???

Research output analysis tools: Analyse, benchmark, showcase  Know where your strengths lie  Make comparisons with competitors  Identify research partners  Identify staff to recruit, retain …. InCites Thomson Reuters SciVal Elsevier Spotlight=performance Funding

Bibliometrics summary  Measures and data sources  Subject variations  Taking it further  Library support role  The debate continues

Bibliometrics and academics?  1989 Times 26 Aug. 4/3 The use of ‘bibliometric’ methods to assess academics' performance by measuring the number of times a person's work is cited by others has caused much controversy in the United States.  OED online accessed 19/11/09
