Protecting your hands! RUNNING RIGHT

1. Think before you begin a job 2. ALWAYS Cut away from your body 3. Do not use your knee pad as a cutting board. 4. Wear gloves when cutting for a splice or belt 5. Never walk with a knife open. 6. Know where the blade is at all times while cutting and where your free hand is positioned. 7. Use a sharp knife, not a dull one. 8. When cutting something overhead ALWAYS cut away from your body and make sure you have solid footing. 9. Use the proper tool for the job. Do not use a knife as a screw driver, etc. Fifty three percent of knife injuries at Alpha Operations have occurred while cutting belts or making cable splices. There are hazards that your hands encounter every day. Can you name a few?

Blades which can cut or amputate fingers or hands!

Rough Surfaces that can scrape the skin!

Machines that can pinch or crush fingers!

Chemicals that can burn fingers!

HEAT!

Bio-hazardous materials Which can cause disease

Repetitive Strain and Impact which can cause injuries over time. Such as Carpal Tunnel…

What is the most common way to protect your hands? Gloves!

It is IMPERITIVE to use the appropriate type of hand protection depending on the hazard!

Hand hazards encountered. Blades that cut / Glove? Rough surfaces / Glove? Machines that Crush! / Glove? Chemicals that burn / Glove? Heat / Glove? Bio hazardous materials / Glove? Repetitive Strain / Glove?

REMEMBER Pay Attention! Engage the big muscle between you ears! Each circumstance may call for a different type of protection! ASK FOR HELP IF YOU DON’T KNOW!

Other ways to protect your hands. Work with respect around machinery. Don’t wear gloves while working closely with moving machinery where there is a danger of becoming entangled. Keep machine guards in place. THEY ARE THERE FOR YOUR PROTECTION! Don’t take short cuts. Keep work areas and gloves clean.

More ways to protect your hands. Avoid repetitive strain Change your grip and work position frequently Use tools designed to prevent injury. Use a wrist support. Rotate tasks to give your hands and wrists a rest.

Hand protection is important! Accidents can and do happen here! Hands are subjected to hazards every day. Use the proper protection. PAY ATTENTION! ENGAGE THE BIG MUSCLE! Use hand protection methods and equipment appropriate for the job. Change Stressful work positions frequently.

REMEMBER! ACCIDENTS DON’T ALWAYS HAPPEN TO THE OTHER GUY! THANK YOU RUNNING RIGHT
