Careers with Children Bellringer: How would you describe a parent who has a parenting style of Permissive. Provide Examples of typical behaviors

 We have focused on guidance  Positive Guidance Strategies  Child Misbehaviors  Working with problem children  Maslow's Hierarchy – Looking beyond the child’s behavior  Parenting styles Today… we are switching gears! These past few weeks….

 Today I will be able to:  Explain difference between subjective and objective  Describe difference between anecdotal and running record  Use my knowledge of types of record while performing my own observations. Today’s Targets:

 Recognizing what we are recording is fact or opinion.  A lot of times we get caught off guard with out emotions and the actions of others seem to escalate  Important to be AWARE of this! How do we prevent biases??

 Subjective- information that is given from a person’s opinion.  Can be based off of fact, BUT it is one person’s interpretation of that fact.  EXAMPLES: newspaper & editorials  Objective- information that provides many points of view.  Intended to be unbiased.  EXAMPLES: News reporters, encyclopedias, reference materials. Objective vs. Subjective

 We are going to watch 2 trailers for the new movie Wreck it Ralph.  YOUR TASK:  Identify which trailer provides subjective information and objective information Trailer 1: Trailer 2: MB334S7R94#! MB334S7R94# Which one is subjective?? Objective? WHY? Let’s take a try…

Wreck it Ralph  Trailer 1:  Follows character  Explains only plot line  Trailer 2:  Commentary…  “It’s finally here!”  “Remarkable in everyway!” Do you see it?

How does this fit in with working in child care centers?

 Caregivers are there to look over the children, teaching and watching their behavior.  When misbehaviors occur or we need to troubleshoot to figure out WHY a child is acting a certain way it is Important to provide accurate information. Observations are key! Tying it all in

Observations  Running Record  Examines the child as well as their behaviors  Very Specific  Word for word – minute by minute  Anecdotal Record  Examines the child in their environment  Looks for a specific incident or behavior that interests them and documents  Describe who what when where and what was said, body movements etc.

Important to focus on what you are writing!  Important to pay attention to HOW you are writing and not adding opinion in observation.  Stating the plain facts  Example:  She drew a picture of a dog VS  She drew a beautiful picture of a dog

Activity  You are going to be holding your own observations today.  Class will be split into 2 groups and each group will be playing a game  ½ will be observing and recording what they see and other half will be playing  Running record, anecdotal record

Debrief  Running record folks: What did you notices about behavior of students?  Anecdotal folks:  What did you notice about behavior Listening to both side do you notice similarities with descriptions? Differences? ** Rank understanding of what we talked about to day and write any questions you have on your notes and we will address it tomorrow!
