la semana (the week) We will review the days of the week each day, just try focus on the today’s word! By Friday you could know all 5. ALWAYSThe Spanish calendar ALWAYS begins with Monday! Never Sunday like ours. The days of the week are not capitalized.

Un poco historia… ( a little history…) Most days of the week are linked to Roman Mythology. WHY? PORQUE the Romanos connected their gods WITH the changing of the nighttime sky. EVENTUALLY… the Romans started to use their gods names for the planets.

The Planets Were: Mars Mercury Jupiter Venus Saturn If you study french, italian, portuguese, spanish, latin, romanian, you will find the days of the weeks are very similar. The latin word for day was dies. (now pronounce that with your Spanish vowel sounds. It should sound a lot like the SPANISH WORD FOR DAY WHICH IS…. Días. The latin word for moon was luna. luna changed to lunes for the spanish word for Monday.

Remember! The planets they used were: luna Mars Mercury Jupiter Venus Saturn lunes = Monday (luna/ moon). martes = Tuesday (mars). miércoles = Wednesday (mercury). ovianjueves = Thursday (jupiter, actually it comes from the adjective jovian with described jupiter). viernes = Friday (venus) sábado = Saturday (saturn) domingo = Sunday (latin word dominus)

La fecha. (the date) Vocab. You need to learn know… hoy, es, mañana, de, qué, la semana, el día. Your notes: To form the date in Spanish, we use the formula: Es el number de month. Hoy es el 25 de agosto. If you want to add the day, insert it between the “ es ” and “ el ”. Formula: Es day el number de month. You write today’s date en español: Hoy es lunes el 25 de agosto.

What does it mean in English? Ayer = yesterdayfue = was veintiuno = 21 Hoy es el once de noviembre. Today is November 11th. Ayer fue el veintiuno de abril. Yesterday was April 21. Mañana es el tres de julio. Tomorrow is July 3.

The only date that does not use the number is when you want to say “the first.” In Spanish, we never use “uno” with the date, we always use “primero.” primeroEjemplo: Es el primero de septiembre.
