What was life like? How do you become a citizen? A SLAVE IN ANCIENT ROME

So how do you become a slave? If you were captured in battle If you were a criminal you could be sentenced to a life of slavery If your parents are slaves then you are born into a life of slavery

What did slaves have to do? Depending on how skilful you were you could be a: Child carer Teacher Cook Doctor If you were not skilled: A gladiator A hard-working labourer (Salt mines and Quarries) You were more like to die at a younger age

How do slaves become citizens? Not all slaves could become citizen. Those respected slaves such as teachers, doctors, child carers often earned freedom the following ways; 1. Earn freedom by being good and loyal to their master. 2. Some masters wanted their slaves to be set free upon their death.

Freedom Ceremony Called a MANUMISSION What happened at a manumission? Slaves were set free by being touched with a VINDICTA They also wore a CAP OF LIBERTY as a sign of their freedom
