Les pronoms indirects

What do we mean??? In French and English we have direct and indirect pronouns I love Bob = Direct Je l’aime = I love him I talk to Bob = Indirect Je lui parle = I talk to him

Indirect pronouns in English are indicated by a preposition (to him / for her / etc) but in French we use an indirect pronoun. These are as follows: me (to me)nous (to us) te(to you)vous (to you) lui (to him/her/it)leur (to them)

How can we spot an indirect sentence? All verbs which are indirect are followed by the preposition à in French. In French they can only refer to a person, not a thing Not all verbs which are indirect in English are indirect in French.

Some common examples donner àto give offrir àto offer envoyer àto send téléphoner àto phone parler àto talk to dire àto say to ecrire àto write to demander àto ask repondre àto reply to

Position in the sentence The indirect pronoun goes in the same position as the direct pronoun (i.e. between the person and the verb) Tu téléphones souvent à Jean? Oui, je lui téléphone tous les jours. Tu parles souvent aux élèves? Je leur parle une fois par semaine.

Have you understood? I talked to them yesterday We asked him why They phoned us last week You gave her a present I told you the truth She wrote to them on Monday
