The First Commandment Lesson 10

Introduction What sort of items do people put in a safe? (money, jewelry, important papers, etc.) Why do they put these things in a safe? (to keep them from being stolen, to keep them from burning up in a fire, to keep them from being lost) A safe protects and keeps secure whatever valuables are in it.

Why does God forbid us to have any other gods? Aim Each of God's Ten Commandments is like a safe. It protects something that is very important. Today we ask ourselves: Why does God forbid us to have any other gods? Why does God forbid us to have any other gods?

The First Commandment Love for God

What does God require of us? Daniel 6:10 Now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem. Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before.

What does God want us to avoid? He wants us to avoid fearing, loving or trusting anyone or anything besides God himself.

What do we want to do now? Psalm 143:2 Do not bring your servant into judgment, for no one living is righteous before you.

What do we want to do now? Confess that we haven't kept God's command perfectly.

What do we want to do now? Romans 5:19 For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.
