2 The First Commandment: Love for God What God Requires of Us Daniel 3:13-18 1. That we fear (respect, honor) him above all things (put him first and honor what he says).

3 why 1. He is the only real God 2. We belong to him. 3. Therefore we will hate what he hates and love what he loves Isaiah 45:21 Declare what is to be, present it— let them take counsel together. Who foretold this long ago, who declared it from the distant past? Was it not I, the LORD? And there is no God apart from me, a righteous God and a Savior; there is none but me. Psalm 100:3 Know that the LORD is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture. Proverbs 8:13

4 What God Requires of Us 2. That we love him above all things (treasure him and devote ourselves to his will). Genesis 22:1-2, 12-18 The skyline of our heart God

My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. I John 4:19 We love because he first loved us. Matthew 22:37

6 What God Requires of Us 3. That we trust him above all things (rely on his Word and promises for all blessings). I Samuel 17:45-50

7 why 1. He can always be counted on to keep his word. 2. He always gives everything we need, especially spiritual needs Psalm 37:5 Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him and he will do this: Psalm 124:8 Our help is in the name of the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth.

12 What our study of this commandment leads us to do 1. To confess that we have not kept it perfectly. 2. To rely on Jesus who has kept it perfectly in our place. Psalm 143:2 Do not bring your servant into judgment, for no one living is righteous before you. Romans 5:19

13 What our study of this commandment leads us to do 3. As God’s justified people; to love and obey this commandment in the future Psalm 119:9-16
