LIVING in the Light of the Gospel Big Idea  If we are going to live for Christ, the Gospel must function as the central core that informs and fuels every area of our lives.

7 Different Problems/Opportunities  Haggai – What are our priorities?  Hosea – What is the extent of God’s love?  Jonah – Who does God love?  Amos – Should God judge?

The “uncoolness” of judgment “Our culture has no problem with a God of love who supports us no matter how we live. It does, however, object strongly to the idea of a God who punishes people for their sincerely held beliefs, even if they are mistaken... It seems to our minds unfair, therefore, that we should determine that it is all right to have sex outside of marriage and later discover that there is a God who is going to punish us for that. We believe so deeply in our personal rights in this realm that the very idea of a divine Judgment Day seems impossible.” -Tim Keller in The Reason for God

Context of Amos  Political & Material Prosperity  Moral Decline  Religious Adultery  They had created a pet god who did not judge… Devolving spiritually even as they were evolving materialistically.

Context of Amos Amos 1:1  1 The words of Amos, one of the shepherds of Tekoa—the vision he saw concerning Israel two years before the earthquake, when Uzziah was king of Judah and Jeroboam son of Jehoash was king of Israel.  Tekoa = small country village about 10 miles south of Jerusalem  Shepherd = actually likely a manager of shepherds

Context of Amos Amos 1:1  1 The words of Amos, one of the shepherds of Tekoa—the vision he saw concerning Israel two years before the earthquake, when Uzziah was king of Judah and Jeroboam son of Jehoash was king of Israel.  Tekoa = small country village about 10 miles south of Jerusalem  Shepherd = actually likely a manager of shepherds Amos 7:14-15  “I was neither a prophet nor the son of a prophet, but I was a shepherd, and I also took care of sycamore-fig trees. 15 But the LORD took me from tending the flock and said to me, ‘Go, prophesy to my people Israel.’

Context of Amos Amos 1:1  1 The words of Amos, one of the shepherds of Tekoa—the vision he saw concerning Israel two years before the earthquake, when Uzziah was king of Judah and Jeroboam son of Jehoash was king of Israel.  Tekoa = small country village about 10 miles south of Jerusalem  Shepherd = actually likely a manager of shepherds  “Go to Israel” = called to leave Judah & go deliver the LORD’s message to the enemy up north

Context of Amos Amos 1:1  1 The words of Amos, one of the shepherds of Tekoa—the vision he saw concerning Israel two years before the earthquake, when Uzziah was king of Judah and Jeroboam son of Jehoash was king of Israel.  Tekoa = small country village about 10 miles south of Jerusalem  Shepherd = actually likely a manager of shepherds  “Go to Israel” = called to leave Judah & go deliver the LORD’s message to the enemy up north He was called to convince a comfortable, secure people that they were in danger of judgment!

How did Amos seek to convince them? Amos 1:2  2 He said: “The LORD roars from Zion and thunders from Jerusalem; the pastures of the shepherds dry up, and the top of Carmel withers.”

Amos 1:3  3 This is what the LORD says: “For three sins of Damascus, even for four, I will not relent. Because she threshed Gilead with sledges having iron teeth…

Amos 1:6  6 This is what the LORD says: “For three sins of Gaza, even for four, I will not relent. Because she took captive whole communities and sold them to Edom…

Amos 1:9  9 This is what the LORD says: “For three sins of Tyre, even for four, I will not relent. Because she sold whole communities of captives to Edom, disregarding a treaty of brotherhood…

Amos 1:11  11 This is what the LORD says: “For three sins of Edom, even for four, I will not relent. Because he pursued his brother with a sword and slaughtered the women of the land, because his anger raged continually and his fury flamed unchecked…

Amos 1:13  13 This is what the LORD says: “For three sins of Ammon, even for four, I will not relent. Because he ripped open the pregnant women of Gilead in order to extend his borders…

Amos 2:1  1 This is what the LORD says: “For three sins of Moab, even for four, I will not relent. Because he burned to ashes the bones of Edom’s king…

Amos 2:4  4 This is what the LORD says: “For three sins of Judah, even for four, I will not relent. Because they have rejected the law of the LORD and have not kept his decrees, because they have been led astray by false gods, the gods their ancestors followed…

Amos 2:6a  6 This is what the LORD says: “For three sins of Israel, even for four, I will not relent.

Amos 2:6b-7a  They sell the innocent for silver, and the needy for a pair of sandals. 7 They trample on the heads of the poor as on the dust of the ground and deny justice to the oppressed

Amos 2:6a  6 This is what the LORD says: “For three sins of Israel, even for four, I will not relent. Amos 2:7b  Father and son use the same girl and so profane my holy name.

Amos 2:6a  6 This is what the LORD says: “For three sins of Israel, even for four, I will not relent. Amos 2:8  8 They lie down beside every altar on garments taken in pledge. In the house of their god they drink wine taken as fines.

Cultural Greed & Consumption Amos 8:5-6  “When will the New Moon be over that we may sell grain, and the Sabbath be ended that we may market wheat?”— skimping on the measure, boosting the price and cheating with dishonest scales, 6 buying the poor with silver and the needy for a pair of sandals, selling even the sweepings with the wheat.

Cultural Greed & Consumption Amos 6:4-6  4 You lie on beds adorned with ivory and lounge on your couches. You dine on choice lambs and fattened calves. 5 You strum away on your harps like David and improvise on musical instruments. 6 You drink wine by the bowlful and use the finest lotions, but you do not grieve over the ruin of Joseph.

Cultural Greed & Consumption Amos 4:4-5  4 “Go to Bethel and sin; go to Gilgal and sin yet more. Bring your sacrifices every morning, your tithes every three years. 5 Burn leavened bread as a thank offering and brag about your freewill offerings— boast about them, you Israelites, for this is what you love to do,” declares the Sovereign LORD.

Amos 5:21-24  21 “I hate, I despise your religious festivals; your assemblies are a stench to me. 22 Even though you bring me burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them. Though you bring choice fellowship offerings, I will have no regard for them. 23 Away with the noise of your songs! I will not listen to the music of your harps. 24 But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream!

Are we deserving of judgment?  James 2:10-11  10 For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it. 11 For he who said, “You shall not commit adultery,” also said, “You shall not murder.” If you do not commit adultery but do commit murder, you have become a lawbreaker.  Romans 3:23  all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God  Romans 6:23a  the wages of sin is death

God wants us to realize we are deserving of judgment! Amos 6:6-11  6 “I gave you empty stomachs in every city and lack of bread in every town, yet you have not returned to me,” declares the LORD. 7 “I also withheld rain from you when the harvest was still three months away. I sent rain on one town, but withheld it from another. One field had rain; another had none and dried up. 8 People staggered from town to town for water but did not get enough to drink, yet you have not returned to me,” declares the LORD. 9 “Many times I struck your gardens and vineyards, destroying them with blight and mildew...

God wants us to realize we are deserving of judgment! Locusts devoured your fig and olive trees, yet you have not returned to me,” declares the LORD. 10 “I sent plagues among you as I did to Egypt. I killed your young men with the sword, along with your captured horses. I filled your nostrils with the stench of your camps, yet you have not returned to me,” declares the LORD. 11 “I overthrew some of you as I overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah. You were like a burning stick snatched from the fire, yet you have not returned to me,” declares the LORD.

God gives us the gift of suffering in order to convince us of the peril of our ways…

God wants us to realize we are deserving of judgment! Amos 8:11-12  11 “The days are coming,” declares the Sovereign LORD, “when I will send a famine through the land— not a famine of food or a thirst for water, but a famine of hearing the words of the LORD. 12 People will stagger from sea to sea and wander from north to east, searching for the word of the LORD, but they will not find it.

God gives us over to our ways & waits for our return in silence…

God wants us to respond & repent! Amos 5:4-6a  4 This is what the LORD says to Israel: “Seek me and live; 5 do not seek Bethel, do not go to Gilgal, do not journey to Beersheba. For Gilgal will surely go into exile, and Bethel will be reduced to nothing.” 6 Seek the LORD and live… Repentance brings life!!!

Romans 6:23  23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

John 5:24  24 “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life.

Jesus ended the famine of the Word of God John 1:14  14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Conclusions & Applications  Social issues are an integral part of biblical spirituality  The reality of God’s judgment obliterates our self-righteousness  The reality of God’s judgment intensifies our understanding of grace  The reality of God’s judgment makes us eager to share grace with others
