Burnt Offering

Lev 4:19-20 (Sin offering for people) ““The rest of the blood he shall pour out at the base of the altar … He must remove all of the fat from the bull. He must burn it on the altar.… When he does, he will pay for the sin of the people. And they will be forgiven.” Lev 4:28, 31 (Sin offering for priest) they must bring as their offering for the sin they committed a female goat … Then the priest is to take some of the blood with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering and pour out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar. They shall remove all the fat, … and the priest shall burn it on the altar as an aroma pleasing to the Lord. In this way the priest will make atonement for them, and they will be forgiven. 1 Sam 15:22 But Samuel replied: “Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the Lord? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams. Hosea 6:6 For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and acknowledgment of God rather than burnt offerings. Commentary on Hebrews 10:5-9

* The Old Covenant (the law and its rules), and the religion of Judaism are now obsolete & outdated. * The system of forgiveness under the law no longer works. * The system of forgiveness under the OT never did what it was supposed to do. * There was limited access to God under the Old Covenant. * God allowed the temple to be destroyed to illustrate that Judaism and its rules was over. * Old Covenant was rules based * New Covenant is based on grace and a personal relationship with God * If God’s focus is no longer the set of rules, then perhaps we should stop emphasizing the rules * God wants us to love Him with our Hearts and with our Minds Commentary on Hebrews 10:15-17

Model of Holy Place & Most Holy Place

The Holy Place represents the Old Covenant The Most Holy Place (where God’s presence was) represents the New Covenant Only the curtain, like a wall of sin, separated them … Matt 27:50-51a “And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.” Mk 15:37-38 “With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last. The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.” Lk 23:44-46 “It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon, for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” When he had said this, he breathed his last.” Commentary on Hebrews 10:19-22

Ex 19:10 And the Lord said to Moses, “Go to the people and consecrate them today and tomorrow. Have them wash their clothes and be ready by the third day, because on that day the Lord will come down on Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people. Put limits for the people around the mountain and tell them, ‘Be careful that you do not approach the mountain or touch the foot of it. Whoever touches the mountain is to be put to death. They are to be stoned or shot with arrows; not a hand is to be laid on them. No person or animal shall be permitted to live.’ Only when the ram’s horn sounds a long blast may they approach the mountain.” Lev 16:2 The Lord said to Moses: “Tell your brother Aaron that he is not to come whenever he chooses into the Most Holy Place behind the curtain in front of the atonement cover on the ark, or else he will die. The Lord’s anger burned against Uzzah because of his irreverent act; therefore God struck him down, and he died there beside the ark of God.” Ex 25:14-15 “Insert the poles into the rings on the sides of the ark to carry it.
