Common Core ELA Overview Grades 3-5 – Complexity increases as students move through year and grade levels  Key Ideas and Details Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly. Make logical inferences from text. Cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text. Determine central ideas or themes of a text and analyze their development; summarize the key supporting details and ideas. Analyze how and why individuals, events, and ideas develop and interact over the course of a text.  Craft and Structure Interpret words and phrases as they are used in a text. Determine technical, connotative, and figurative meanings, and analyze how specific word choices shape meaning or tone. Analyze the structure of texts, including how specific sentences, paragraphs, and larger portions of the text relate to each other and the whole. ELA Grade 4 – vs  The narrator’s relationship with her grandmother develops during her visit. How does their relationship develop? How do they communicate even though they do not speak the same language? Math Grade 5– vs The city park is 9 3/10 miles from Roland Elementary School. The city library is 3 3/10 miles from the same school. How much farther from the school is the park than the library? A. 6 miles B. 12 miles C. 6 3/10 miles D. 12 3/10 miles Mr. Morris built a fence to enclose his yard. He put up ¾ of the fence on Monday. On Tuesday, he put up 1/6 of the fence, and on Wednesday, he put up the rest of the fence. What portion of the fence did he put up on Wednesday? A. 11/12 B. 3/5 C. 2/5 D. 1/12

So what does this mean?  NYS changed the cut scores and scores across the State plummeted!  Our 5 th grade did very well in comparison to other schools.  Increase in students identified as in need of Academic Support Services (AIS). The Facts on the Facts! Students should master addition and subtraction facts by the end of 2 nd grade. Students should master Multiplication and division facts by the end of 3 rd grade. We will integrate our Envisions Math series with the State provided MODULES.

 Read as much non-fiction as fiction.  Learn about the world by reading.  Read more challenging material closely.  Discuss reading using evidence.  Write non-fiction using evidence.  Increase academic vocabulary.  Full Implementation of Module 1 at all grade levels.  Tri Semester Report card based upon Standard specific criteria.  Common planning time to allow for continued dialog during this implementation.
