Things that go “Bump” in the night… and at other times. n Bulking Paints, Acids & Bases u Lab Packs vs Loosepacks vs Bulking u 2-Part Epoxy Paints u Isocyanate Paints u Mushroom Drum u Bulging Drums

Bulking Paints, Bases & Acids n Bulk oil base paints separately from latex based paints - exception oil/latex paint combinations are bulked as oil base paints. n We loosen the bung plugs in our oil base paint drums during storage. n 2-part epoxy paints, body bondo, and paints containing isocyanate products should be handled separately.

Bulking Paints, Bases & Acids, continued n Most liquid bases may be bulked with no problem. n Don’t bulk ammonia containing solutions or bleaches… they can produce toxic gases n Loosepack all dry bases and those which do not readily pour.

Bulking Paints, Bases & Acids, continued u Bulking concentrated acids should NEVER be done. Exothermic splashback, toxic fumes can result. u Loose/lab pack concentrated acids, keeping organic separate from inorganic and pack. You may mix, but contractor will establish what you should do for them. Hydrofluoric acid and Nitric acid in their own separate shipping containers.

Checking Your Facility n Daily and weekly walkaround inspections. Do you do them? u Inspect all drums to see if any are leaking, expanding or showing any signs of failing. u Are all drums secured at night? Lids on and rings in place? u Are all air tools turned off, including the air compressor?

Checking Your Facility, cont. u Is waste receiving area in an organized and safe condition? u Are all wastes properly sorted and placed in the appropriate storage area? u If you have a waste exchange… are all items being offered in clean, original containers and not leaking?

Checking Your Facility, cont. u Do you have an adequate number of carts for receiving wastes from the public? u Are there any obtrusive or chemical odors present? u Is ventilation system in good working order? u Are the floors clean, dry, and uncluttered?

Checking Your Facility, cont. u Are all tools, supplies and other equipment, including PPE put away or stored in a proper area? u Do you maintain a 30” minimum spacing between rows of drums being stored? u Are the fire extinguishers in place and charged? u Is there anything unusual going on?
