Lesson Topic: Perimeter and Area on the Coordinate Plane in Real Life Lesson Objective: I can…  I can apply my skills of determining the perimeter and area of polygons on the coordinate plane by designing a blueprint of my dream backyard and determining the perimeter and area of each object I include on it.

Assignment Requirements  Must include at least 1 unique irregular polygon  1 unit = 1 foot  Must determine the area & perimeter of each object you include  Must include at least 5 different polygons  Make it your best work - Add color  Be creative and have fun!

Assignment Example

Preview of Exit Ticket  What are the coordinates of each vertex of your irregular polygon in the form (x, y)? List all.  What is the area and perimeter of your irregular polygon?  Challenge: Written answer - Why would you want to know the area or perimeter of your irregular polygon?

Example 1 – On your own or synergizing with tablemates What is the area and perimeter of my deck? When you’re done, try to find another way to solve it.

Let’s Sum it Up Answer each question in a complete sentence:  What 2 ways can we use to find the area of irregular polygons?  What is the difference between perimeter and area?

Area involves covering, while perimeter involves surrounding.

Example 2 – On Your Own What is the area and perimeter of my table? When you’re done, try to find another way to solve it.

To Do: 1. Completing your Exit Ticket is your priority – it must be done on your own before you leave today 2. Work on your blueprint - draw your polygons in pencil first, finding each one’s area and perimeter as you go 3. Add color to your blueprint

Lesson Summary & Evaluate Your Learning Answer in complete sentences: 1 – How do we find the distance between points on the coordinate plane? 2 – How are area and perimeter related? 3 – Why would we want to know the area or perimeter of a shape in the real world? 4 – What are some other professions that use area and perimeter? How? How will you “Sharpen Your Saw”?

Looking Ahead…  Your completed blueprint is due tomorrow  First Geometry Test tomorrow – Study!!!  Come in for tutoring tomorrow and/or Thursday morning for help  Galileo Review Packet due Thursday  Galileo Friday
