The Will of the Gentiles 1 Peter 4:3–7

1 Peter 4:3 For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries: (KJV) For the time already past is sufficient for you to have carried out the desire of the Gentiles, having pursued a course of sensuality, lusts, drunkenness, carousing, drinking parties and abominable idolatries. (NASB)

“Lasciviousness” (KJV) or “Sensuality” (NASB) Greek: aselgeia (10x) “licentiousness, wantonness; lack of self- constraint which involves one in conduct that violates all bounds of what is socially acceptable, self-abandonment; wanton (acts or) manners, as filthy words, indecent bodily movements, the unchaste handling of males and females”

“Lusts” (KJV & NASB) Greek: epithumia (16x) “desire, passionate longing, lust; a desire for something forbidden or simply inordinate, craving, lust”

“Excess of wine” (KJV) or “Drunkenness” (NASB) Greek: oinophlugia (1x) “drunkenness, debauchery; drunkenness, implying the consumption of a large quantity of wine”

“Revellings” (KJV) or “Carousing” (NASB) Greek: kōmos (3x) “a village festival, revel; originally [it referred to] a festal procession in honor of Dionysus (cp. our festival of Mardi Gras), then a joyous meal or banquet, in the NT only in a bad sense excessive feasting, with μέθαι [drunkenness]”

“Banquetings” (KJV) or “Drinking parties” (NASB) Greek: potos (1x) “a drinking bout; a social gathering at which wine was served, drinking party”

“Abominable idolatries” (KJV & NASB) Greek: athemitos (2x) & eidōlolatria (4x) “lawless; not being sanctioned, not allowed, forbidden” “image worship; the worship of false gods, idolatry”

1 Peter 4:4 Wherein they think it strange that ye run not with them to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you: (KJV) In all this, they are surprised that you do not run with them into the same excesses of dissipation, and they malign you; (NASB)

1 Peter 4:5 Who shall give account to him that is ready to judge the quick and the dead. (KJV) but they will give account to Him who is ready to judge the living and the dead. (NASB)

1 Peter 4:6 For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit. (KJV) For the gospel has for this purpose been preached even to those who are dead, that though they are judged in the flesh as men, they may live in the spirit according to the will of God. (NASB)

1 Peter 4:7 But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer. (KJV) The end of all things is near; therefore, be of sound judgment and sober spirit for the purpose of prayer. (NASB)
