The Life and Disappearance of Amelia Earhart By: Ellen

Amelia Earhart was born on July 24, She was born in Atchison, Kansas. She was born in her rich grandmother’s house. The Birth of a Pioneer

Amelia’s Family She had a sister named Muriel. Her mother’s side of the family was very rich. She was especially fond of her father, and she thought he was smart, funny and handsome. Her father had trouble keeping a job.

Childhood In the summer of 1909, before Amelia’s eighth grade year, she went to the Iowa state fair and saw her first airplane. At the time she didn’t think much of it. She went to the world fair, where she saw her first roller coaster. When she went home, she built one of her own. One December she went sledding with her sister. She was going so fast she went right under a horse.

Teenage Years Her father couldn't keep a job so her family split up. Her mother took her and her sister to a rooming house in Chicago.

Education Amelia Earhart went to Hyde Park High School in Chicago. She was a good college student. She dreamed of going to a first-rate college, but there wasn’t enough money in the family. There was enough money to send her to a good private school for girls.

Adult Life Worked as a volunteer nurse during world war I from Moved in with her mother, who lived in California in 1920, where she became fascinated with aviation, which was dangerous, even for men. She became a social worker in 1926, but she continued to fly planes. She married George Palmer Putram.

Important Events She took flying lessons from one of the only women pilots at the time, Neta Snook. She purchased her very own plane, which was unusual at the time for women. In 1937 she became the first woman pilot to fly across the Atlantic Ocean.

The Disappearance Amelia disappeared on July 2, 1937, along with her navigator Fred Noonan. She is probably deceased, because she was never found and it has been 71 years since she was last heard from. A giant search was issued, but neither she or Fred Noonan were found.

Why She is Remembered She was one of the first female pilots. She was the first woman pilot to fly across the Atlantic Ocean. She tried to fly around the world. She inspired many woman with her achievements. She was a pioneer.

Why She Interested Me She was the first woman pilot to fly across the Atlantic Ocean, and she tried to fly around the world. She had a puzzling disappearance.

The Two Most Important Lessons I Learned Hard work pays off. She bought her own plane, and got a flying license. You shouldn’t always care what other people think. She didn’t care that some people thought she shouldn’t fly a plane simply because she was a woman.

Why She Is a Hero She inspired many women with her accomplishments. Now, we have many women pilots because of her.
