Innovations in Accommodations Sue Ellen Lunbeck LSAC Academic Assistance Training Workshop, Denver, CO.

Newest Accommodation: Accessibility Utilize Universal Design for Learning (UDL) as defined in Higher Education Opportunity Act of Utilize Technology as directed by OCR guidelines. ADAAA 2008: Mandate is and always has been: Provide equally effective access to programs, services, and benefits to any individual with a disability who is qualified to participate. Provide equal access in the most integrated manner possible. LSAC Academic Assistance Training Workshop, Denver, CO.

What’s New ADAAA lists additional specific major life activities (reading, concentrating, thinking) ADAAA lists major bodily functions including conditions like asthma, diabetes, Crohn’s, and chemical sensitivities. LSAC Academic Assistance Training Workshop, Denver, CO.

Technology Must Be Accessible National Educational Technology Plan requires that UDL and emerging technologies be used to help all students achieve regardless of background, language or disabilities. Technologies offered must be “appropriate and effective”. LSAC Academic Assistance Training Workshop, Denver, CO.

DOJ Guidelines Technologies must provide an equal opportunity to obtain the same result and reach the same level of achievement. Technologies must provide the individual with “substantially equivalent ease of use” and must also meet the equal access requirements regarding timeliness and integrated services. LSAC Academic Assistance Training Workshop, Denver, CO.

Faculty, Staff, and Administrators are Responsible for Accessibility Compliance LSAC Academic Assistance Training Workshop, Denver, CO.

Institutional Responsibilities Develop a Compliance Plan Provide Training To Faculty, Staff, Administrators Identify barriers to accessibility with pro-active steps (cannot wait until a complaint has occurred to take action). LSAC Academic Assistance Training Workshop, Denver, CO.

Providing Accessibility Using UDL and Technology as an Instructor Begin with planning of class or workshop Develop goals and objectives. Consider methods of presentation to best meet goals. If audience is known: consider all characteristics of group in determining methods of presentation. Consider all barriers that could prevent participation. Consider modifications; consider specific accommodations. Consider and prepare differentiated levels of instruction. Always make sure technology is available and working. LSAC Academic Assistance Training Workshop, Denver, CO.

Is There Technology that Could Be Used? – There is no single solution for accessibility. – The “reasonable accommodation” will depend upon the individual student’s learning style, functional impairment, the type of technology, the learning objectives, and the context of the use. – Low tech solutions can be just as effective as high tech in some circumstances. – Work arounds are still a viable accommodation. LSAC Academic Assistance Training Workshop, Denver, CO.
