Learning Objective - To know the difference between Density and Distribution. -To identify a range of factors affecting population density. Keywords Density, Distribution, Dot Map, Choropleth, Positive/Negative, Physical/Human, Natural/Economic, Sparsely/Densely.

Definition! Population Distribution- the way in which people are spread out across the world. This distribution is uneven and changes over time. Patterns of population distribution tend to be uneven. For example, in the UK there are more people living in the south-east of England and London than in Wales. It follows that populations are sparse (widely spread out) or dense (crowded close together) in different locations, regions and countries. sparsedense

Definition! Population density- the average number of people per square kilometre. It shows whether an area is sparsely or densely populated. Population density is calculated using the following formula: Population density = total population total land area in km2

Dot map- world population distribution. +s Shows concentrations well -s can give the impression some areas have no people.

A choropleth map- shows the average density across regions. +s Easy to read -s Disguises major population concentrations.

Factors affecting population distribution and density There are a number of different physical and human factors which affect why people are not spread evenly across the world. Task You Must: Complete the handout on factors affecting where people live. You Could also: Decide whether the place where you live is sparsely or densely populated. Give reasons for your answer. List which factors affect your area. Add any others that you think are important!

Complete the sentence You can use some of the words below to help! When people are attracted to an area it becomes…………. populated. Factors that influence this include…………… climate; good supplies of………….. resources and…………….. land. Sparsely, temperate, fallow, artificial, fertile, natural, extreme, densely.

How well have you done? Yes! I have understood fully and have made good progress. I have done ok but I am still unsure of some of it. Help! I don’t understand it.
