Presentation transcript:

It was July 1st 1863 the first day of battling in Gettysburg Pennsylvania. Joshua Chamberlain had less than 400 soldiers that didn't have experience. Most of the soldiers were fisherman or lumberjacks. Chamberlain was the leader of the union army(the north) and the confederates(the south) could not take control of Little Round top, a hill. The confederates tried to push them off the hill. They pushed back 5 times.

The Battle Of Gettysburg took place halfway through The Civil War, this battle had lasted three days. In the whole Civil War, even The Battle Of Gettysburg, the generals of the south were Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson. The general of the north was Ulysses S. Grant.

It was July 2 nd the second day of battling in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Soldiers had arrived, making both armies stronger. Robert E Lee, General of the confederate army was really wanting to attack the union army. His 65,000 soldiers (the confed.) against their 85,000 soldiers (union). Lee had faced a hard task, but he did not believe the union could defeat him! The south’s main goal was to take over Little Round Top and Big Round Top this time. General James Longstreet led this confederate attack. The attack was supposed to start early in the morning, but it took a long time to get his men in the right position. The union general Daniel F. Sickles had been given a order to hold Little Round Top. Daniel did not like this position so he decided to move the soldiers a mile away.

Since General Sickles moved the soldiers up a mile, there was no one to defend the Round Tops. There was no time to go back, the confederates started attacking. The attack was fierce. He hurried and sent four regiments to the hill. The 20 th Maine Infantry was the final to arrive. It was bloody. Charles E. Hazzlett, a first lieutenant was standing by a union officer who had got shot in the head. A lot of deaths happened on both sides, but the union held on to Little Round Top. By the end of the day the confederates had some ground at Culp’s Hill, but it’s not over yet!

At four o’clock in the morning General George Pickett (of the south) finally got his men in position. Richard Ewell (of the north) started to charge Culp’s Hill, which the confederates had a little of. For seven hours they have been fighting. The confederates had fought boldly. Finally they were held back.
