Erik West Greater Portland Council of Governments Portland, Maine Temperature slips and so do Mainers Wednesday, January 5, 2000 Even with some salt and sand on the sidewalks, it was still hazardous going for pedestrians. As workers rushed to offices in downtown Portland, one desperate pedestrian was seen crawling along the sidewalk on Pearl Street because it was too slippery to stand. Far fewer people were hurt in car accidents in Greater Portland than in falls Tuesday.
