PulseEnergy.com December 13, 2011 Request for RTF Subcommittee Whole Building M&V Approach Pulse Energy

PulseEnergy.com Background Pulse Energy is an energy management information software firm based in Vancouver, BC Commercial sector focus Current customers include several northwest utilities Vendor in BC Hydro’s Continuous Optimization program –Large commercial customers –Offering: Efficiency auditing + EMIS –Collecting and reporting real time energy consumption data –Leveraging Pulse learning algorithm to establish baselines for whole building M&V Interest from many other utilities in exploring this approach –Key question: “How do you know the prediction is accurate?” 1

PulseEnergy.com Background (Cont’d) Pulse Energy is assembling a scope of work for a third party assessment of the predictive capability of our energy demand algorithm General approach (proposed) –Use ~18 months of past interval data, divide into “learning” and “predicting” phases –Use Pulse and other approved M&V methods (e.g. regression) to build models based on “learning” period –Compare models’ forecasting accuracy compared to actual data for the “predicting” period 2

PulseEnergy.com Request We want the report to be valuable for you –RTF is one of the key audiences –also: CPUC, other utilities, etc. We have a draft scope of work but seek your input on key questions, including: –Number and type of buildings (e.g. Sectors, geographies) –Basis of comparison (e.g. R 2 ) –Data sets (granularity, fuel type) Timeframe –Commence study late January/early February
